Development
This system is basically the Soviet ZU-23-2 twin 23 mm towed anti-aircraft gun system, manufactured under licence in Poland for some years, fitted with two locally produced Grom man-portable surface-to-air missiles. Full details of the Grom are given later in the Man-portable surface-to-air missile systems section.The Tarnow Mechanical Works completed the first prototype of this system in 1985 and it entered service with the Polish Army the following year.According to the prime contractor, the 23 mm cannon allow aerial targets to be engaged out to a maximum range of 2,000 m and up to a maximum altitude of 1,500 m.The Grom fire and forget surface-to-air missiles can be used to engage aircraft approaching up to a maximum altitude of 3,500 m and from the rear up to an altitude of 5,500 m down to a minimum altitude of 10 m.
