Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. military has blocked access to a range of popular commercial websites in order to free up bandwidth for use in Japan recovery efforts, according to an e-mail obtained by CNN and confirmed by a spokesman for U.S. Strategic Command.
The sites -- including YouTube, ESPN, Amazon, eBay and MTV -- were chosen not because of the content but because their popularity among users of military computers account for significant bandwidth, according to Strategic Command spokesman Rodney Ellison.
The block, instituted Monday, is intended "to make sure bandwidth was available in Japan for military operations" as the United States helps in the aftermath of last week's deadly earthquake and tsunami, Ellison explained.
U.S. Pacific Command made the request to free up the bandwidth. The sites, 13 in all, are blocked across the Department of Defense's .mil computer system.

Dolphins get there throats cut and also there babies too,Whales get there backs broken by a nice long spike and I have no respect for this so called advanced society at all!!!! I have watched these idiots kill so many of our intelligent ocean friends by cutting there throats while still alive. It makes me want to puke. Now at least they will get there long overdue rest from these terrorists from above,given to them by mother nature herself,may they enjoy there time in there enviroment in peace!!!!!! Of those, youtube is the only one you might use to take videos of the situation in Japan, all the others you'll probably only be looking for p orn.
Just calm down, take pictures and email them, and otherwise go outside and take a walk rather than sucking up bandwidth, so that more meaningful and relevant communications can get through during this period of crisis. less

I could be wrong but I doubt many Japanese citizens access the internet via the US military network. Instead, they are probably using a public isp or private employer or university networks. They didn't shut down the websites... they just limited access via US military computers because the bandwidth is needed to help in the rescue operations. less

Great job of actually reading the article. Did you even go past the title? This affects US military users on US military networks only. And does it not make sense? Youtube, Googlevideo, ifilm, metacafe all stream video.
Of those, youtube is the only one you might use to take videos of the situation in Japan, all the others you'll probably only be looking for p orn.
Just calm down, take pictures and email them, and otherwise go outside and take a walk rather than sucking up bandwidth, so that more meaningful and relevant communications can get through during this period of crisis. less

I could be wrong but I doubt many Japanese citizens access the internet via the US military network. Instead, they are probably using a public isp or private employer or university networks. They didn't shut down the websites... they just limited access via US military computers because the bandwidth is needed to help in the rescue operations. less

我不敢确定我是对的，但我仍然怀疑是否会日本人通过美军网络来连接互联网。他们很可能只是用公共ISP或者大学校园网而已。美国人甚至连网站都没关掉，只是限制了美军访问而已，因为救援工作真的的需要带宽
