NINE Chinese nationals are threatening to jump off the roof of a Sydney detention centre if their demands aren't met by nightfall.

Nine Chinese asylum seekers have climbed onto the roof at Villawood detention centre in Sydney.

The five men and four women, one of whom claims to be two months pregnant, say they are protesting because their applications for refugee protection visas were turned down by the Immigration department.

The group climbed onto the roof of the Villawood Detention Centre at 9am (AEST) on Wednesday, about 15 hours after a 30-hour standoff involving 11 mainly Tamil asylum seekers ended at another wing.

The fresh group of protesters spoke to an interpreter on the phone about midday on Wednesday, telling him they had been on a hunger strike since the death of 36-year-old Fijian Josefa Rauluni, who killed himself at the centre on Monday.

The interpreter told reporters outside the detention centre that the Chinese nationals were aged between 20 and 27 years old, and came from the Fujian province.

They have been in Australia about six months and entered the country on student and tourist visas.

The interpreter said the group want refugee protection visas, and are threatening to jump off the roof if their demands are not met by Wednesday night. They have not specified a time.

A spokesman for the Immigration Department would not say who the protesters were or what their immigration status was.

"They are not irregular maritime arrivals," he said, adding that staff at the detention centre were continuing to engage with them but their activities would not alter the department's processing of their cases.

Meanwhile, 11 men who ended a standoff on the centre's roof on Tuesday night have been placed in isolation, despite assurances they would not be punished, said Jamal Daoud of the Social Justice Network.

“This is the worst form of punishment, where they have no contact with their friends and don't know what is going on,” he said.

“They have been put in isolation despite being assured by authorities this would not happen.

“This will weaken their confidence and the Chinese (protesters') confidence in the authorities to do as they have promised.”

The men eventually agreed to come down after they received assurances their cases would be looked into by representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Meanwhile another group of Iranian and Kurdish asylum seekers are also staging a hunger strike in protest against their possible deportation.

Two of the 16 men were reportedly hospitalised on Tuesday afternoon, four days after they stopped eating in response to fears they would be sent home.

Mr Daoud said on Wednesday the men remained very weak and advocates were concerned for their health.

NND,看成小学生了{:ya:}
偷渡移民吗?{:yi:}
