Outstanding photographer Tambako the Jaguar captured pictures of Zoo Zurich's new wolf cubs earlier this summer. The Grey Wolf and its subspecies once ranged over most of North America, Europe and Asia but have been pushed to the northern boundaries of most of these continents by habitat destruction and eradication efforts. These wolves share a common ancestry with domestic dogs, although how you get from here to a chihuahua is something we would love to see time lapse photography of.

Flory, a  Pygmy Hippo born in late September at the Diergaarde in Blijdorp, Netherlands, rests close to mom. These photos and video, by lensman A.J. Haverkamp, show the infant Pygmy Hippo at only ten days old. Critically endangered in their native home of Western Africa, Pygmy Hippos thrive with proper care at zoos and most of what scientists know about this fascinating animal is derived from zoo populations.

On December 5th, after thirteen months of gestation, Baird's Tapir mother "Abby" gave birth to a healthy female calf at Massachusetts' Franklin Park Zoo. The baby girl weighed just 21 lbs. at birth, compared to her mother's weight of 700 lbs.  Her keepers named her "Tupelo," after the honey, because of her sweet disposition.

Making her public debut Dec. 4th, this little Amur Leopard cub was born four weeks ago at Germany's Serengeti Park. Native to Russia's Far East, Amur Leopards are critically endangered with less than 40 estimated left in the wild.

The Singapore Zoo has hatched the first baby Komodo Dragon in it's 34 year history. Here you get a rare glimpse at the world's heaviest lizard at it's very smallest: just hatched! At this size the apex predator of the the Indonesian isles looks pretty harmless but in adulthood wild Komodo Dragons grow up to 10ft long and eat deer or even buffalo!

Korea's Everland Zoo is home to some of the all-time classic ZooBorns. In this shot, photographer floridapfe catches one of the zoo's Pigtail Macaques in dreamland.  Sleeping off a turkey hangover perhaps?

ZooBorns readers are no strangers to adorable ocelot kittens, but this interaction with Litchfield, Arizona's Wildlife World Zoo's new ocelot kitten was too cute to pass up. Thanks to vileoxidation for the great pics.

ZooBorns is thrilled to feature its first baby hyena, three month old Kai from the Denver Zoo. Contrary to popular myths about hyenas' bad attitudes, they are actually extremely intelligent and affectionate animals. While little hyenas might look like puppies, they are actually more closely related to cats.

Otter pups always provide for a generous helping of "pile-on".  This series of images taken at the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan in Osaka, Japan is no exception. The Asian Small-Clawed Otter pups, born in late August, are still on display to the public and have met with much popularity this fall.

Uruguay's M’Bopicuá Breeding Station keeps surprising us with births we haven't seen anywhere else. Here we have a gentle Paraguayan Hairy Dwarf Porcupine. Born with soft fur that turns into hard spines with age, these porcupines live in trees eating fruits and vegetables and dig into ant nests for dessert.

Two Puggles (baby echidnas) born in August were put on display for the media at Australia's Perth Zoo yesterday. The Puggles' names are Moa and Kain. Having bred the notoriously difficult-to-breed species three years in a row, the zoo believes it has the foundation of a captive breeding program for its critically endangered cousin, the long-beaked echidna of New Guinea.

The Taronga Zoo is helping Ripley the barking owl chick (the latest addition to its bird flight presentation) learn the ropes.  Acclimatization though new experiences is the name of the game for this 40 day old baby barking owl.

Time to check back in on our favorite Fennec Fox kits at the Everland Zoo in Seoul, Korea. Zoo photographer In Cherl Kim takes outstanding photos of these epically adorable canines. Fennec Foxes are uniquely suited to the desert, where their big ears let them detect insects dancing across the sand at night and fur lined paws protect them from scorching hot sand during the day.

As the Taronga Zoo vet staff performs check-ups on their new little Tasmanian Devil joeys, we check back in on these feisty little babies. Characterized by their black fur, pungent odour when stressed, extremely loud and disturbing screech, and ferocity when feeding1, Tasmanian Devils make poor dinner guests.

The Buffalo Zoo welcomed three baby capybaras on September 10th. The zoo tells us that the three babies were running around and even swimming the day they were born. The proud capybara parents have had three previous litters for a total of 20 offspring! Capybaras are the world's largest rodent with the largest recorded size at 232 lbs (105 kg)!

Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbits are the world's smallest and among the rarest. Native only to a single area of Washington State, this once isolated population of Pygmy rabbits usually weighs less than a pound in adulthood and was declared extinct in the wild in the '90s, after the remaining 14 bunnies were scooped up and taken into the equivalent of bunny protective custody.

This year the Oregon Zoo welcomed 26 of the little guys, bringing this year's total to 73 baby bunnies (kits) among participating breeding facilities. Color is added to the ears in the pictures below so zoo staff can tell the kits apart.
