down, and then increasing to 0.625" HTS to the ship's bottom. All of these spaces in the anti-torpedo system were cut
in the transverse direction by 0.375" HTS watertight bulkheads at regular intervals.
Other than the vertical girders holding the bulkheads apart at intervals there were no internal decks within the anti-torpedo system spaces so liquid could fill them from top to bottom, if desired, with no obstructions.
Normally the three middle 3' spaces were kept liquid filled and the outer and inner 4' spaces were kept empty voids unless counter-flooding had to be done.

Notes:
1) The propellant charge was in five bags.
2) The Mark 5 APC was a major change to a hard-capped, sheath-hardened AP projectile that could penetrate caliber-thickness face-hardened armor at 30-40° obliquity (this was its test specification). It gained most of its extra weight by reducing the filler to only 1.5% of its total weight and by using a thicker, wider, high-hardness AP cap. Many of these were also made as the 16" (40.6 cm) Mark 12 APC for the U.S. Army Coast Defense Command. These projectiles also had a very blunt - though still pointed - nose under the AP cap to improve high-obliquity penetration of medium-thickness homogeneous deck and turret roof armor. The Mark 5 APC projectiles were designed for use against Japanese ships ("Plan Orange") at long range in the Pacific Ocean by firing them at a lower muzzle velocity and at a higher gun elevation, which allowed a steeper angle of fall to further enhance deck armor penetration.
3) After 1941 APC had a nominal 1.5 lbs. (0.68 kg) dye bag added but this was allowed to be as large as 3.0 lbs. (1.36 kg) in order to bring underweight projectiles up to standard. These ships were assigned the following dye colors:
Colorado - Orange
Maryland - Blue (?)
West Virginia - No dye

Notes:
1) The propellant was in six bags.
2) The Mark 8 APC has a 9crh nose while the Mark 13 HC has a 8crh nose.
3) The explosive cavity in the Mark 13 HC projectile has a relatively thick-wall with a relatively constant sidewall thickness, getting slightly thicker at the nose. It had somewhat less explosive weight than most foreign projectiles of World War II or even earlier USN HE projectiles, since it had as part of its requirements the ability to penetrate light armor and heavy concrete for shore bombardment purposes.
4) During World War II BuOrd developed AA shells for these guns. These were apparently standard HC rounds with a mechanical time fuze replacing the standard nose fuze.
5) The Mark 8 APC projectile was originally the longer, heavier "big brother" to the Mark 5 APC to which it was very similar in almost all respects. However, in mid-1944 the improved Mod 6 version came out with significantly better hardening techniques which gave a noticeable improvement in penetration at 35° or so against thick face-hardened armor - so much so that a memo was put out to return all previous Mods of this shell ASAP when the Mod 6 became available for loading aboard ship. It also had an even blunter, rounded nose (with no point) to further enhance penetration against deck armor at high obliquity. Like the Mark 5, the Mark 8 APC projectiles were designed for use against Japanese ships ("Plan Orange") at long range in the Pacific Ocean by firing them at a lower muzzle velocity and at a higher gun elevation, which allowed a steeper angle of fall to further enhance deck armor penetration.
6) The Mark 8 APC had a nominal 1.5 lbs. (0.68 kg) dye bag but this was allowed to be as large as 3.0 lbs. (1.36 kg) to bring underweight projectiles up to weight. Dye colors were assigned as follows in 1945:
USS North Carolina - Green
USS Washington - Orange
USS South Dakota - Blue
USS Indiana - Red
USS Massachusetts - Green
USS Alabama - No Dye

Notes:
1) This three-gun mounting had individually sleeved guns which were spaced further apart than in the previous 14" (35.6 cm) three-gun mounts. They also used delay coils, which delayed the firing of the center gun by about 0.060 seconds (60 milliseconds). These changes gave this weapon considerably improved dispersion characteristics when compared with the older 14" (35.6 cm) triple and three-gun mounts.
2) Training was by a 300 hp electric motor driving hydraulic gear. Each gun had a 60 hp motor for elevation, a 60 hp motor for ramming, a 60 hp motor for shell hoist and a 75 hp motor for power hoist. Each of the two shell rings used a 40 hp motor.
3) The gun axes were 117 in (297 cm) apart.

Designation Three-gun Turrets
North Carolina (3) and South Dakota (3)
Weight 1,403 - 1,437 tons (1,426 - 1,460 mt)
Elevation Turrets I and III: -2 / +45 degrees
Turret II: 0 / +45 degrees
Rate of Elevation 12 degrees per second
Train -150 / +150 degrees
Rate of Train 4 degrees per second
Gun Recoil 48 in (1.219m)
Loading Angle +5 degrees
