Olympics: America turns the tables  According to the US media, gold medals don't count for as much as they used to. Wonder why that might be?
  August 14, 2008  3:30 PM

It's an odd thing: whenthe US media report on the Beijing Olympics medal tallies, they showtables with nations ranked by "total medals" won - rather than by goldmedals won, which is the more usual way of doing things (sinceotherwise a bronze counts the same as a gold, which is hardly the case).
And yet - it wasn't always that way in America's media. Comparethese two medal tables from USA Today. The first is from the 2004Athens Olympics. The USA is number one in both golds and total medals -but notice that China beats Russia into second place, despite Russiahaving many more medals in total than China.

Now fast forward four years and let's look at USA Today's onlinemedal tally from Beijing - and notice that Russia is ranked ahead ofItaly despite having won fewer gold medals. Hmm.

What's the reason for this? Anything to do with the likelihood thatChina is going to spank America's butt in terms of golds won - but thatthe USA has a chance to top the overall tally? Maybe ... anyway, theway China is going it may even win the overall tally as well, makingAmerica a loser however you count it.
Perhaps the US networks should start celebrating bronze medals asthe true sign of Olympic achievement? Because there the USA team stillhas a big lead.

How damning. What are you going to do for an encore, Richard? Find a split infinitive in the Declaration of Independence?

Richard Adams?:D

Of course I did. :D I went there and read the comments and had a good laugh. Of course some of the better ones were for the opening ceremony and I really got a good chuckles with the Brit's grit. I was joking with Spica because I knew he was in the left coast and the smiley used on the Richard question was a bit suspicious so I took the bait. :P As far as Dick was concern, no I would not interpret it for any other means unless his last name is Cheney. :@ :@
