BUSAN, Republic of Korea ? USS Ohio (SSGN 726), the U.S. Navy'S newly-converted guided missile submarine, arrived in Busan, Republic of Korea, Feb. 20 for a scheduled port visit.
The Korean-American relationship is very important, and visiting Busan gives us the opportunity to strengthen that relationship,?said Capt. Andy Hale, commanding officer, USS Ohio. 揗y crew and I are looking forward to experiencing the exciting culture of this great Korean city.?br>
This is Ohio抯 first visit to a port outside U.S. territorial waters,? Hale added. Mur visit to this city serves as an example of the positive relationship that exists between the U.S. and Republic of Korea (ROK), as well as emphasizing our shared dedication to supporting regional stability.?br>
While underway, Ohio will participate in Exercise Key Resolve/Foal Eagle, an annual combined/joint exercise involving forces from both the U.S. and Republic of Korea. The exercise provides training to further enhance interoperability and combat readiness, while demonstrating both countries?commitment to the ROK/U.S. alliance.

The Republic of Korea is one of our closest allies in the Pacific, and this friendship is a key element of peace and stability in the region,? said Hale.

Ohio was the lead ship of the Ohio-class Trident ballistic missile submarines, and the first in its class to be converted from a ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) to a guided-missile submarine (SSGN) carrying up to 154 conventional Tomhawk cruise missiles. The conversion also provides the SSGN with the ability to deploy special forces and serve as an underwater command and control base.

USS Ohio is commanded by Capt. Andy Hale and is homeported at Bremerton, Washington. The first of the SSGN抯 to deploy following conversion, Ohio currently serves under Commander, Submarine Group 7, headquartered at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan.
