The Chinese supposedly stole maglev train technology from the Germans when they built one in China.

I saw this on the TV news this morning and it wasn’t until I looked at the report a second time before I realized it was in China.

Looks like a typical new-generation Shinkansen to me. Which, knowing the Chinese, it probably is. They are never shy about buying or stealing technology.

It’s cheaper and faster than building it from scratch.

What is the cost of the ride from Shanghai to Beijing? I have wanted to go to Beijing. I was thinking of taking a flight but this sounds interesting. The Shanghai to Guangzhou trip sounds interesting too.

And the Germans "borrowed" it from us. Google "Bachelet maglev"

The CRH2-300 is a modified E2-1000 series Shinkansen. Several of the E-2 series trains were sold to China in 2006 and modified licensed manufacture was supposed to begin in 2010. Maybe things are ahead of schedule.

There is another high speed train, the DJJ-2, that was designed in China, but it only remained a prototype and never went into mass production. The CRH2-300 seems to incorporate some of it’s features, such as the prominent front headlights, that weren’t from the original E-2.

It’s amazing what China can accomplish when France gives the technology, factory, and training free of charge to China just in the hopes of securing contracts. I wonder if the French still think it was a good idea when all they got was the line from the airport to Shanghai? And they STILL had to foot the bill for that one!

Yes, you qre right. Siemens (Germany) and Alstom (France) got conned into giving their technology up.

They were asked to bid for the contract but in order to be awarded, they had to share critical aspects of the design. In the end they werent even awarded the contract. Typical of China.

It was OK - around 750 RMB one way. About the same as a flight, but I wanted to try the train one time (I usually fly).

Around the Nanjing-Shanghai-Ningbo area, I strictly take trains. Further than that, I’d highly recommend planes unless you spend a LOT of time in China, and aren’t on a fast tour/trip type schedule.

Planes are cheap and easy inside China - just don’t buy from Expedia or one of the non-Chinese sites (I like eLong). You can get flights for half or less of what Expedia lists. And if the flight is tomorrow or 3 months from now, the price is the same - low...:)

Don’t know how much they had to steal considering the Chinese government contracted and paid Siemens to install a Maglev like from the Pudong Airport into Shanghai...

It's typical for the Chinese to include technology transfer as part of the contract package. So, "stolen", is a bit too strong of a language.
