Chinese Moon Photo Not Fake, But Not Pristine
By John Borland December 05, 2007 | 8:54:53 AMCategories: Space

For the last week, rumors have flooded the Net that China's moon photo, posted here and elsewhere, was a fake. Some bloggers and commentators argued that in fact it was a NASA photo, and that the Chinese hadn't produced anything original at all.

The rumors reached such a pitch that Chinese lunar scientist Ouyang Ziyuan felt compelled to refute them on Monday, noting a bit acerbically that the Chinese and American orbiters did, in fact, take pictures of the same spot.

Thankfully, Planetary Society blogger Emily Lakdawalla has done her homework, rather than rely on insinuation and guesswork. She compared old photos of the moon from NASA's Clementine orbiter with the new photo, and found considerable similarities – they were indeed depicting the same location – but enough differences to prove they were separate photos.

Most notably, the light in the Chinese photo was coming from a different direction. Possible to fake, like everything with Photoshop, but pretty unlikely.

Particularly, it turns out, given what else she saw. Ouyang had earlier pointed out an apparently new crater in the Chinese photo, which – when Lakdawalla looked closely – was fairly obviously the artifact of an improperly joined seam, where different photographic strips had been joined and blended to make a prettier whole.

This kind of photo manipulation is common, although misjoints like this aren't. Many photos seen of space objects are "composite," meaning several different images have been joined, sometimes even from different cameras or telescopes.

Lakdawalla sums up the story well:

So, in a way, the story has come full circle. The Chang'e image isn't a fake as far as I can tell; my personal opinion, based upon the evidence I was able to dig up, is that the Chinese do have an orbiter at the Moon, and that it is producing really beautiful images that are a great improvement over Clementine. But the one released image is a processed product, and was altered slightly (the seams were blended away) to make it pretty. This alteration made it difficult for a scientist to realize that what appeared to be a new feature was in fact an artifact.

For a detailed look at the images in question, and how they compare, visit Lakdawalla's post here. I'm not going to post the comparison here, because she deserves full credit.

It's odd that moon images are so often questioned. We can do so many other things that stagger the imagination; why are people reluctant to believe that we can't go to the Moon? I find it also particularly interesting that many people are apparently willing to believe something so improbable (faking a moon mission? That's serious business, way harder than faking a memoir or a resume).

Skepticism is certainly useful, but there's an ugly scent in the air when so much extraordinarily bitter criticism gets leveled at China in particular.

Kudos to Lakdawalla for untangling this rumor.

No, the Chang'e image isn't fake – but there's no new feature in it either  [Planetary Society blog]

China defends lunar probe pictures
By Richard Spencer in Beijing
Last Updated: 7:05am GMT 04/12/2007

The head scientist of China's flagship lunar probe programme has been forced to defend the authenticity of its first published photograph after internet moon-gazers suggested it might be a copy.

Beijing to target bike thieves with identity scheme
Richard Spencer's Beijing blog
The Chinese prime minister, Wen Jiabao, unveiled the first photograph sent back on the inaugural mission of the Chang-e 1 lunar probe amid much patriotic emotion last week.

China's lunar probe pictures taken last week, left, and the 2005 NASA pictures, right. The extra hole in the Chinese pictures could suggest it was hit by an extra meteorite.

But in a response to public scepticism unusual for such a token of national pride, internet bulletin boards began pointing out the similarity of the photograph to one published by NASA, the American space agency, two years ago.

Ouyang Ziyuan, head scientist of the China Lunar Exploration Project, issued a statement insisting the photograph had not been copied and really was genuine.

"China's first moon photo is absolutely not a fake,” he said, adding that though the two shots were of the same part of the moon's surface, a new crater was shown in the Chinese version.

Chang'e 1, named after a fairy who fled to the moon from an unhappy marriage, was launched in October to much fanfare.

advertisementIt represents the start of the second phase, after manned space flight, of China's long-term goal of putting a man on the moon by 2020.

When the first photograph, a compilation of 19 individual shots, was unveiled to the public, Mr Wen was described by state media as "passionate", an unusual epithet for a Chinese Communist Party leader.

"Chinese people's dream of flying to the moon for more than 1,000 years has started to materialize," he said.

"It showcases eloquently that the Chinese people have the will, the ambition and the capability to compose more shining new chapters while ascending the science and technology summit."

But one bulletin board poster, who called himself IMCC, wondered if it was a coincidence that the picture was so similar to the NASA version.

"The two pictures are not just alike," he wrote. "They are actually are the same. If this is indeed a fake, I feel truly sorry. How can such a big country try to fool the public?"

The suggestion might be regarded as another coming-of-age ritual for the fast-developing China, like the space programme itself.

After all, the allegation that Neil Armstrong's moon landing of 1969 was faked by NASA is one of the international conspiracy theorist's favourites.

However it comes at a time when China's 160 million internet surfers scent blood.

The most widely discussed dispute of recent weeks has been about whether a photograph allegedly of a South China tiger in a forest, which would have been the first sighting for years of an animal now thought only to survive in zoos, was created by photoshop.

The photograph was widely publicised and welcomed by government wildlife officials.

An official inquiry yesterday pronounced it fake - two weeks after an internet hunt which eventually found a calendar shot of a tiger whose appearance was identical to that apparently photographed in the forest.

"When the tiger-man was eventually shown to be a fake, the whole world laughed," IMCC went on. "Maybe this is the same. What on earth is going on?"

Not everyone agreed. One pointed out that since NASA had photographed the entire surface of the moon, a Chinese version could only be a fake if it didn't have a perfect match in the American set.

Close examination of the two lunar photographs does suggest that they were of the same section of the moon - a highland area located between 54 to 70 degrees south latitude and 57 to 83 degrees east longitude.

But there does seem to be an extra hole in the Chinese version, which Mr Ouyang attributed to the possibility that the surface had been struck by a meteorite or other celestial body in the last two years.

Or, he added, the Chinese photograph might just be of better quality than the American.

China says moon pictures not faked from NASA

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has dismissed Internet gossip that its first photo of the moon taken from a lunar orbiter might have been plagiarized from NASA, local media said on Monday.

The country launched its first lunar probe, the Chang'e 1, in October and released a photo featuring a patch of grey moon surface splotched with craters last week, hailing the mission as a "complete success."

But some Chinese Internet users have questioned its originality after comparing it with an almost identical lunar image from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2005.

"There is absolutely no forgery," Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist for the lunar probe, told the Beijing News.

The Chinese and U.S. lunar images looked similar only because they had aimed at the same area of the moon's southern hemisphere, Ouyang was quoted as saying.

"But a careful examination will tell some small differences," Ouyang said.

There were two craters on a certain spot of the Chinese photo, but there was only one on that same spot of the American picture, the Beijing News quoted him as saying.

"Maybe it's because the resolution of the American photo was not high enough, or a new pit might have been generated by an asteroid hitting the moon between 2005 and 2007," Ouyang said.

"I understand the doubts of the Internet surfers. They hope the Chinese lunar probe can do well so they don't want the photo to turn out to be fake," he said.
