------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Torch-lit military ceremony in Berlin accused of reviving Nazi

Independent, The (London), Oct 27, 2005 by Philip Blenkinsop in Berlin

Plans by Germany's armed forces to stage a torch-lit musical ceremony in Berlin in a 50th anniversary celebration have drawn protests for being overly militaristic and a throw-back to the Nazi period.

About500 soldiers were due to hold flaming torches and play trumpets, pipes and drums outside the Reichstag parliament building last night, watched by military leaders, President Horst Khler and the Nato secretary- general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

But demonstrators, angered that the ceremony was taking place near parliament for the first time since the Second World War, were expecting about 1,000 protesters to march along Berlin's central Unter den Linden avenue at the same time. Critics say it is an archaic tradition that should have been scrapped when the postwar German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, were formed in 1955.

Hundreds of police blocked the protesters from proceeding beyond the Brandenburg Gate to the nearby Reichstag.

The 'Zapfenstreich', originally just a signal indicating lights- out dating back to the end of the 16th century, took on a musical form and has been an institution for the German armed forces since 1838.

Wolf-Dieter Narr, a professor of politics at Berlin's Free University, argued that the ceremony belonged to the eras of German imperialism and the Nazis. 'I don't claim it was the product of the Nazis, but it was certainly a ceremony they used,' Professor Narr said.

Demonstrators' posters featured torch-carrying soldiers reminiscent of the Wehrmacht under Hitler.

Frank Brendle, of an alliance of anti-ceremony groups, said the transformation of Germany's military from a purely defensive force to more professional units capable of operating abroad was another focus of the protest.

'It is an expression of militarised politics. We have moved from an army of defence to one of attack,' Mr Brendle said.

But the outgoing Defence Minister, Peter Struck, defended the celebrations. 'The tattoo has nothing to do with Nazis or the Wehrmacht, but is an old Prussian tradition,' he said.

'I can understand that someone who is generally against the military should attack such a ceremony. But I know that the majority of the population thinks of the tattoo as a good event.' REUTERS
