The F-35 program has been lauded as an example of the United States and its allies working together to bolster inter-operability, but in Asia the maintenance plan is bringing traditional rivalry between Seoul and Tokyo to the fore.

I was told by our KATUSA senior army sergeant I should really remove it because of what Japan did and for my own safety! A hard lesson in international customs indeed!

Wait, so at first, I thought the US chose Japan for heavy maintenance in Asia in that many Asian countries ordered it, and they chose Japan. Now, I see that only 3 Asian countries ordered it; Japan, South Korea, and Australia (if you consider them Asian) and of these 3, the US basically snubbed SK, making it the only Asian nation incapable of servicing their own jets. Why would the Koreans take this insult? The only reason people buy F-35 is for good relationships with the US, not to be insulted; it's not a great plane and the price tag is horrendous. North Korea doesn't have anything that can deal so much as a good fleet of F-16s. I say drop the F-35 deal for this insult, and either fast-track the KF-X (get GE F-404 engines or if they don't wanna sell, get RD-93 from Russia) or buy some other jet like the Gripen NG (Typhoon and Rafael are way expensive). Better yet, if you really want a great plane for a great price, you can get the Su-35 or wait for the PAK FA, but that is really gonna ruffle some feathers in Washington, and Russia may not even want to sell to avoid sensitive technology going to a Western-leaning country.
