The high-level Committee onForeign Investment in the United States has approved the $7.1 billion deal,which would put the Chinese company in control of the world's largest swinegrower and pork processor, they said.

The committee, whichoperates under the US Treasury, investigates any major foreign purchase of a USbusiness that could be seen as damaging national security.

The clearance was animportant hurdle to pass before the takeover goes ahead.

But some politiciansexpressed concerns about the takeover of the company, especially given China's huge demand for pork imports and risingprices in the USmarket, as well as concerns over whether the Chinese company would adhere toadequate sanitary standards.
