Japan's economy contracts at swift pace

HONG KONG (CNNMoney) -- Japan's economy contracted at anannual rate of 3.5% in the latest quarter, sparking concerns of a sustainedregional slowdown.

日本上季度经济下滑了3.5%，引发了持久性区域经济放缓的担忧


The GDP figures, reported Monday by Japan's CabinetOffice, were worse than economists had expected, and indicated the mostdramatic contraction since the country was hit by the earthquake and tsunami ofMarch 2011.

The negative 3.5% rate for July to September is also farworse than the revised 0.3% annual growth rate for the previous quarter.Japan's Nikkei closed down almost 1% in trading in Tokyo.

The world's third-largest economy, Japan risks slippinginto recession if the economy remains in contraction during the current quarter.Some economists have warned that scenario looks increasingly likely.

I am a Japanese citizen. Economy has beenin bad shape for years that if you have a regular employment, you can be proudof yourself. Companies are now reluctant to accept regular staff and try to dobusiness more with temporary workers. I am pretty sure rows with China ishurting. I am wondering if Japan can shift cooperation to India, Vietnam,Philipine, and Thailand more.

I am not sure if you understand what thisreport really means, since 20% of exports of Japan are to China, if the Chinesestop buying Japanese products, it will hurt the Japanese economy a lot, losingthe second biggest market in the world is not a wise choice. Just shift plantsor factories to other places cannot solve the problem, the exports will notrise, meanwhile, moving assets internationally are not easy, require a lot oftime and money, moreover, you probably cannot find enough sophisticated workersin the countries you mentioned. Japan is ageing and those once successfulcompanies like Sony Panasonic Sharp etc are going thorough their difficulttime, I think Japan's decline is inevitable and Japanese politicians are asnaive as children. Good luck Japanese people.

Yeah. I know. The sad thing is many peopleare unwilling to cooperate. There long has been a plan to reduce a number andsalary of unnecessary civil servants. For instance, a municipal driver in Osakareceives $800,00 ($1=100 yen). Such a salary is hard to be earned even bylawyers and skilled engineers these days. Such plan never seems to be executed,because these civil servants try hard to prevent the change. Their labor unionopposes it. They are fed on citizens' tax and living on unreasonable rich life.Why can't they just accept the reduction plan and live a tight life likeeverybody else does now? Such self-centeredness is another drag to our society.

the world's democracies are held ransom tosocial security(nenkin), my wifes grandpa gets about 6800$ a month in socialsecurity in a time when the government has to go into debt to pay. the elderlyin japan are already soooo rich and due to deflation they dont invest and arejust saving it in cash or in a non interest paying account. the youngergeneration will be paying for the people from japan's golden age or there willbe need to be a yen crash. Japanese companies are currently sooo uncompetitive.

China and Japan fighting is like US and UKfighting, it makes no sense. Almost 60% of Japanese have Chinese blood, another30% have Korean heritage. Yes, it happened a long time ago but it is stillundeniable, they are relatives....So, like most families, they fight?
And since Asia is becoming the future "centre of the world" in termsof wealth and productivity, it would only serve both of their interests to beco-operative. You can already see what can happen when they co-operate.Unfortunately, however, there are still too many "old thinkers" inAsia and it will be their downfall because the world is modernising at afurious rate and those who cling to yesterday will be swept away in the tide.
The past is past, it serves no-one to pick at the wounds. There are anotherbillion children waiting to live. They don't need hate or war, they need foodand education and love.
