评论:

I'vetravelled extensively throughout China. While Westerners love to seepicturesque hovels where the people live their traditional lives the peoplethemselves want to live in safe, clean and modern accommodations. There isplenty of tradition in China and now the noveau riche are buying up oldcourtyard dwellings in the remaining hutongs and gentrifying them.

When the BigMoney comes, your individual biological and cultural uniqueness will bereplaced by....mile after mile of sterile concrete, computer-generated cityplans, with artful, appropriate greenery islands, and other thoughtfuladditions to the Perfect City. If you're not a suitable addition to thebackground scenery, you can/will be removed. Hail, progress!

It isinevitable that people will be excluded from the benefits of rising economicproductivity, as long as the process of urban development remains"captured" by vested interests. In China, this is well-placed CCPofficials. The price of apartments in most Chinese cities is simply obscene.

In an agewhen energy costs will only go up, suburbanization comes to an end.Suburbanization is the product of cheap energy. Same as with big gas guzzlingcars. People live in cities to save energy costs, as in not having todrive  long distances to get to work.Energy used to be cheap in America, and after using a lot of it, we beganimporting it even more cheaply from the Arabs. But all of that is now history,as will be suburbia soon enough. The "American Dream" is barelysubsisting on fumes.

It's nodifferent than the way people lived in London, or New York, or in any citywhere people came from rural areas -whether locally or as immigrants fromcountries overseas - to live in crammed and overcrowded slum conditions.  These are the early, unhappy stages ofurbanization. That's why not many of these people are smiling. Their hope isthat their children will live better in a generation or two.

Newsflash:There are POOR PEOPLE in China!!

This isembarrassingly derivative.  You're abouta decade too late to take advantage of the "black and white photos ofsenior citizens in lane houses" zeitgeist.

Oh look, another piece focusing on China's negative side, and surely the only conclusionis they lack FREEDOM!!! and DEMOCRACY!!!!.

Oh look another person who thinks he has thecool edgy take on China. Hate to break your bubble, but it's true. China lacksdemocracy, freedom, and a huge host of other problems that can't be swept awayby economic growth. It's a screwed up country that has no comparison toAmerican life. American trailer park inhabitants have ahigher standard of life than 75% of Shanghai. Live here long enough and you'llunderstand just how messed up this country is, you goddamn armchair culturewarrior. China's "disadvantaged" population is larger than thepopulation of the whole US.

"China's"disadvantaged" population is larger than the population of the wholeUS."

"Chinalacks democracy, freedom, and a huge host of other problems that can't be sweptaway by economic growth. "
No you don'tneed democracy and freedom to put food on the table, to provide decent homes, healthcare, education, and best of all, a high degree of social mobility wherepeople can realize their dreams of getting rich. These are not the inherentqualities of democracy and freedom. Any government worth its saltshould be able to deliver these with or without democracy and freedom which isoften oversold and over promoted by those with vested interests.

Yes you areright, I am sorry, the only thing China lack is FREEDOM!!! and DEMOCRACY!!!!
I wish Chinawould be more like the DEMOCRATIC!!! FREE!!! India, Haiti, Philippines,Indonesia, Iraq, Afganistan where they have much higher living standard thanChina, where the peace loving government provide for it is people whereeverything is sunshine and rainbows.
