At a launch site in the desert the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft is being readied. It may blast off this weekend, and one of the three crew is likely to be a woman.

In the year that the Communist Party wants to showcase its achievements ahead of a once-in-a-decade leadership change in the autumn, you might expect China's national media to be in overdrive about the event.

Not yet, it seems. The People's Daily's brief announcement with photographs about the two women who have been shortlisted for the mission was noticeably brief.

'Heroines of today'

It may be that everyone is waiting for a safe lift-off before they hail a new national heroine. China is poised to join a small club. Seven nations have sent a woman into space, and only two, the Soviet Union and the United States, have done so using their own spacecraft.

China has an ambitious space programme

But China's internet users, websites and regional papers have been fired-up by the announcement.

The Netease website published photos of the two candidates, who are both airforce pilots.

More than 76,000 people added comments to the story, and on Monday it was the second most talked about topic on Sina's Weibo microblog.

"Finally, we are going to have our first female astronaut. They are the heroines of today. It means Chinese women have occupied another place in history," said one internet user from Shanghai.

"No matter which one gets chosen, China's proud of them both," wrote Xiaolongfei from Urumqi.

China National Radio News and Phoenix news website said both women are members of the Wuhan Aviation Troop, describing them as "outstanding pilots with super-strong mental qualities who have passed a rigorous selection procedure".

Some reports have described the women as "fighter pilots". But Zhang Jianqi, former deputy commander of China's manned space programme,is quoted as saying that the women are both from the "transport aviation troop".

He added that the selection criteria for female astronauts is similar to that used for men, "the only difference is that for female astronauts, married ones are preferred because they are more mature both mentally and physically".

'Baby eagles'

The first candidate is Major Liu Yang, 34, from Henan Province. She was honoured as a "model" pilot in March 2010 and showed a "rare calm" to land her plane safely after it was struck by 18 pigeons. On the QQ instant message service she goes by the name "little flying knight".

The Shenzhen Special Zone Daily says she is an only child with a penchant for making patriotic speeches.

In a letter home after her first parachute jump, she explained why she never let her parents visit her during her four years in pilot training.

"Baby eagles", she explained, "can never soar under their family's wing".

The paper adds that once, during an English speech competition, she said: "As a female pilot, the sacred rose garden in my heart is the motherland's blue sky."

Up against her is Captain Wang Yaping, also 34, from Shandong Province. She can apparently fly four types of aircraft. She flew missions delivering relief supplies after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, as well as cloud-seeding aircraft to ensure clear skies over Beijing during the Olympics.

Major Liu and Captain Wang both have one child each.

Little World, a Weibo user in Shanghai, posted a blog saying: "I heard on the radio today female astronauts must not have body odour or decayed teeth. More importantly they must be married and have had children. It must have been a natural delivery. They won't qualify if they have delivered their babies via caesarean-section."

The reasons are apparently that scars could open up in space, dental problems could cause serious complications, and body odour must be avoided in a confined spacecraft.

But the Jinghua Times says Wang Xianmin, an official with China's space programme, has insisted that there is no requirement that female astronauts must already be mothers.

Some on the internet have been quite taken by the photos of the women in their military uniforms. "Wow, they look so cool," said "Kaykay 1013" in Hangzhou.

But "Rayfish" from Beijing was not so impressed, commenting "Their uniforms are really ugly. Can we not design something better to impress the world? Our astronauts' uniforms make them look like fishery workers."

And "Arm2012" from Guangzhou was even less patriotic, writing: "The photos of our female pilots are really not as pretty as American ones."

Whatever you think of the uniforms, if the mission goes off as planned it will also mark another significant milestone.

The astronauts are aiming to complete China's first manned docking with the Tiangong-1 module already in orbit, an important first step towards China's aim of creating a working space station by 2020.

Wow, thanks for telling us what those random Chinese punters thought. Their expert knowledge of the Chinese space program really added weight to the story.
Here's a quote from me to add yet more gravitas:
"The one on the right is really cute", said Coldframe, a random punter commenting on the BBC website.

To be an astronaut you've got to be your countrys best of the best. Given the size of China's population it is no mean feat to climb to the top of such a tall tree. And yet here we have a BBC article choosing to analyse blogger comments about stretch marks, the threat of bad BO and how attractive the 2 finalists do or don't look in their military uniforms.
Seriously BBC, stop with the dumbing down and give us educational and informative stories, not tittle tattle.

Cheers to their accomplishments. Let us hope this is a successful mission.
As to the negative sentiments expressed not only in the article, but also in the comments:
-Both the USA and Russia would not have had much of a successful space program without the German scientists they captured after WW2. So China is not the only country whose progress was in part due to 'acquisition' of intellectual capital.

Even with a 50 year history of space flight behind it the US Shuttle programme had 2 accidents killing all crew. I'd be praying for a safe launch before trumpeting this too. Good luck to them... they're braver than me.
Agreed with #6 though. This column is often just random Chinese blog comments with no attempt to verify facts. Are 'Little worlds' comments actually true or the usual gibberish people post on HYS (such as swine flu vaccine actually causes swine flu..... )

The first American astronauts were all married because the government wanted astronauts to have a squeaky clean wholesome image. I suspect China's space agency is under similar pressure from their political masters. And when it was first starting out NASA had medical concerns that in retrospect sound equally silly as anything China has come up with.

Competition can be a good thing, but it's a shame that we as a species have to waste so much time recreating the same achievements for each space-faring country. If we could instead pool our technology effectively (the ISS and various probes & telescopes notwithstanding) we'd probably have colonies on Mars by now.

China has nearly 1.4 billion people and a middle class that is more prosperous by the day. For the first time in its recent history, more than half of its population is urbanized. The largest Internet population in the world is China's. China's demand for automobiles has made it a larger market for new cars than even the United States. China's economy is the second-largest in the world. For people to say that China is "impoverished" is not only inaccurate, but disrespectful. I think it's fantastic that China is setting its sights on the stars and I wish it well.

That depend on what you understand about COMMUNISM which is in fact an economic model.
Kerala, the only communist state in India has the most educated population. Nobody there is starving.
All NPC deputies are elected to China Parliament with the exception of the top leaderships. But then tell me, is your British PM elected?
Like it or not, this is an ASIAN CENTURY and one of the greatest fear of the West is the East Asia, ASEAN and South co-operating and united together in their economies and military.
And why do we fear the Russia? They have been the balance to a hegemonic USA in the past.

Why does every article on China turn into pointscoring between busybody western liberals and brainwashed Chinese nationalists? Let's talk about space! I welcome China re-starting the space race, because that's the only way humanity can spur itself on to do something exciting. Since the Soviets disappeared, all we seem to ha've done is fiddle about in LEO, and send probes to Mars. So all power to the first female chinese astronaut! My daughters will be excited to hear about it, I am sure. Leave the rose gardens and baby eagles though....the very endeavour has always been romance enough for me.

As usual, infantile comments on this site when a space dossier is concerned. When will people grow up?
For my part, as a friend of that bravest of brave ladies, Judi Resnick,(lost in the Challenger disaster), I wish the astronaute chosen a safe flight and return..

When ships sailed on voyages of exploration in the 14th and 15th centuries, they used to hold funeral services for the crews.
These days people seem to want to live a risk free life.
Luckily there are still those who will risk all.
Bon Voyage and a safe journey home.

@Capricorn, if David Cameron is not voted to represent his constituency he cannot be Prime Minister. The job of Prime Minister is chosen by the party who wins the election, but yes the Prime Minister must win a seat in parliament first.
Also anybody can join any political party and therefore vote on who becomes its next leader.
