MANILA, Philippines - The Catholic Church should turn to "prayer power" to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing dispute between the Philippines and China over the Panatag Shoal, according to a Church official.

Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said the Church should direct the various dioceses in the country to conduct an Oratio Imperata, to pray for the territorial row in the West Philippine Sea.

Arguelles, former head of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Military Ordinariate, said the Philippine government must show that the country is a Christian nation that wants a peaceful solution to the territorial row.

"Dapat lang talaga na magkaroon na tayo ng Oratio Imperata sa isyu na yan! Sa amin sa Lipa matagal na naming ginagawa ang pagdarasal para sa maayos na outcome o pagresolba sa problemang iyan...Hindi dapat girian ang solusyon diyan. Dapat ipakita natin sa China na Kristiyanong bansa tayo at kapayapaan ang pino-promote natin! Dapat ma-convert natin ang mga [Tsiono] sa usapin ng pananampalataya.,"the Archbishop told Church-run Radyo Veritas.

Arguelles said he is opposed to the ongoing anti-Chinese protest rallies of Filipino communities, adding these actions would only aggravate the situation.

"Tutol ako diyan. Lalo lang magpapalala iyan sa tension sa pagitan ng mga Pinoy at [Tsino]. Dapat friendly tayo. Dapat ipakita natin na pakikipagkaibigan ang pakay natin. Diplomasya at mabuting pag-uusap ang dapat gawin para maging maayos ang kahahantungan ng isyu," he said.
