The Brown Bear Project

  The Brown Bear Project was started in 1995, ended in 2006.It was a procurment project of Russian T-80Us, BMP-3s, Metis-M(AT-13 Saxhorn-2) ATGMs, Igla-1E(SA-16 Gimlet) MANPADSs for ROK Army, Murena-E LCACs for ROK Navy and IL-103 basic trainers, Ka-32(HH-32) choppers for ROK Air Force and also dozens of KA-32s for government use.

  Russian government insisted this project to pay down loans. our government wanted Russian natural resources for the loans, though.

  About 1.5 billion USD loans was given to ex-USSR for political reasons but new Russian Federation couldn't pay back this loans in cash. actually we paid 50% in cash and other 50% from the loans when buying those weapons.

  Unintended by ROK Ministry of National Defense but the then government started this project anyways. under pressure from the then government, ROK MND once considered to purchase small quantities of various high-end Russian weapons to study them but Russia refused this.

  There are still more than 1.5 billion USD loans left.
