President Obama was holding crisis talks on Tuesday to try and break a budget deadlock that could bring America’s government services to a standstill.

With time running out, a showdown meeting between Mr Obama and Republican leader John Boehner ended Tuesday morning without breaking the impasse.

If an eleventh-hour agreement on the overdue U.S. budget isn’t struck by the end of the week, funding for government services will run out on Friday and trigger at least a partial shutdown.

The result will be that federal offices for everything from passport offices to bankruptcy courts will be forced to close.

Congressman Eric Cantor, the Republican leader in the House of Republicans, blasted the president for rejecting a plan to push back the deadline another week.

'The White House now has increased the likelihood of a shutdown in just dismissing out of hand a vehicle that we have put forward to say, "Look, we do not want a shutdown",' he said.

The brinkmanship continued as both parties argued over the scale of cuts in the budget for this year and 2012.

Republican lawmakers insist the budget proposals outlined by Mr Obama in February do not go far enough. Mr Obama's proposals would slice a record $32million from current spending levels and save more than $977billion over the next decade.

Raising the stakes, Republicans leaders introduced a spending plan for next year they claim will slash the nation’s deficit by nearly $5trillion over the next ten years.

It blends unprecedented spending cuts with a restructuring of taxpayer-financed health care for the elderly and the poor.

Mr Obama has warned that without a deal the ensuing government shutdown would ‘jeopardise our economic recovery’ just as jobs are finally being created.

Democrats claim the sweeping cuts could push the economy back into recession.
'I don't know if we will need divine inspiration or divine interjection into this matter, but whatever it might take, I hope people of good will can come to an agreement,' said Democratic Senator Dick Durbin.

But Republicans, who took control of the House in a landslide last November with much of their success built around the promise of lower taxes, less spending and smaller government, claim drastic action is needed to close the deficit gap.

The stand-off is further complicated by the fact that the Senate is Democrat-controlled while the Republicans hold sway in the House of Representatives – and both congressional chambers must agree to the final budget.

The two sides remain at loggerheads over where the cuts would fall.

Democrats want to protect scientific research and education and carve just under $2billion out of defense and security spending.

Republicans, meanwhile, want to use the budget to choke off funding for dozens of Obama administration priorities, including his health care reform and environmental protection policies.

The White House is already said to be preparing for failure. Memos have been sent out to government departments telling them to prepare for an ‘orderly’ shutdown if the budget deadline passes without a deal.

cry as the might, this budget was supposed to be passed last year. The leaders Pelosi, Reed, and President, even tho having a majority in both the house and the senate could not agree even then and still have not submitted a budget. Now it is the Republicans fault for action not taken last year? Spend more to cut the debt, run it like a business if you do not have it do not spend it.

The US has been living way beyond it's means for way too long. It has gotten worse under the current administration. Things are getting scary around these parts. Not only is a gallon of gasoline around $4, but community staples like Walmart are looking ill, some of them look like they are about to close around here. It's not just Blockbuster and Hollywood video. It's Supermarkets and many other businesses that the average person uses daily to get by. There are a lot of empty buildings. Not just a few. For those of you abroad who enjoy a holiday in the US, you are going to find a very different US then next time you come here, than the one you remember. Maybe it is time the government does shut down, if nothing else it will remind everyone that this is one of the worst economic disasters in the 200 someoddyear history of this country and drastic measures need to be taken.

- Jonathan, Warwick, RI, 6/4/2011 4:47

The rhetoric battle has already started. Republicans want to kill old people! Republicans don't want your child to have a good education! Blah, blah, blah. Someone has to be the adults in the room, and get our nation's fiscal health back in order. I'm thankful for the republicans for stepping up to the plate.

- I love Freddie Mercury, St. Louis, MO, 6/4/2011 5:31

I find it odd that this budget wasn't passed back in October when it was due, especially since both houses were Democratic along with our Darling Democratic President. Oh, I forgot, there was an election in November and the President and the Democratic Congress people were afraid to pass one. The President has some nerve saying the Republicans are playing politics. I hope the Republicans have the political courage similar to the Republican governors, who are challenging the "PUBLIC" unions, to pass a responsible budget that will cut into our record deficits.

- sara, mpls,mn, 6/4/2011 6:11

The Democrats are so good at avoiding decisions for which they cannot blame the Republicans for any potentially bad outcomes. They had a super majority for two years in which they could have done so much without opposition; but they have succeeded in alienating themselves to tea-party who represent the good ordinary Americans, with what little they have done.

- mike, woking, 6/4/2011 8:12

Your headline Oblahma .. AND the Republicans. LMAO, the Dems have had since Oct AND their super-majority to get this done. The Republicans won big in Nov and vowed to cut spending. Dems are in a panic and looking for someone to blame.

- dave, Anywhere USA, 6/4/2011 12:00

Tracking car tire serial numbers... yep each time you buy a tire they put the serial number into a big government database... which is used for nothing.

I am unhappy about this. I am a federal worker who works on a military base. I have some money saved so I will be ok, but let me tell you what Im not ok with. Im not ok the congress still collecting a paycheck while I sit at home unpaid because they couldnt act like adults. If they cant pass a budget that means they arent doing their jobs and they shouldnt be paid for that. The other thing that disgusts me as a military vet is that our men and women overseas fighting the wars this gov started wont be getting paid either until they come to an agreement. That is total and utter BS!! Im telling, I hope that what is happening in Lybia, Syria and other countries happens here. We need a massive change. Not the one Obama was talking about.
