Garuda 2010, a military exercise involving the air forces of India, France and Singapore, entered its final phase June 24 and is set to conclude June 25.

Held at Istres Air Base in France, more than 60 missions have been successfully flown during the exercise. Six Indian Air Force (IAF) SU-30MKI aircraft, along with the Mirage-2000-5, Rafale and F-16, engaged in various air defense maneuvers, such as the implementation of “no-fly zones” and large force engagements both during the day and at night. The SU-30 also took part in high-value airborne asset protection, as well as protection-busting missions.

The IAF’s IL-78 refuelers and the French air force’s KC-135 refuelers conducted cross refueling of the other air force’s fighters.

The SU-30s were subjected to “swing roles” in which the same aircraft was simultaneously placed in offensive and defensive roles. The E-3 AWACS provided radar coverage during the exercise.

The IAF and French special forces teams each conducted a pair of day and nighttime paratrooper jumps out of the IAF’s IL-76.

“Our participation in the exercise has reinforced the manner in which we conduct our operations,” IAF Air Marshall K.K. Nowhar said. “It has also helped us refine our doctrine. In the future, there is a slim chance that a country would operate in isolation, especially in a cooperative defense scenario. Thus knowing each other’s best practices in terms of tactics, techniques and procedures is the main objective of this exercise, which is also a part of the ongoing Indo-French Defense Cooperation.”
