Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies Launches One More Investment Project

On the 1st September 2008 the Board of Directors of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies approved the financing for the enterprise which will produce metal cutting tools with the nano-structured coatings. The partners of the Corporation in this project are «Saturn» and Gazprombank. The total amount of the financing into the project equals 1 billion rubles, 500 million of which will be backed by the Corporation.

The project will be financed in two stages:

September 2008 till March 2009: project documentation approval, creation and testing of pilot plant.

April 2009 till March 2010: production facility construction, equipment purchase and installation, personnel trainings, production launching.

The production facilities will be located in Rybinsk City in Yaroslavl’ Region at the production site of  «Saturn». The core products to be manufactured by the new plant are carbide-tipped tools for aircraft engine parts processing and engineering industry enterprises. Here “ Saturn” itself will become a large consumer of the products manufactured by the plant providing an off-take of up to 30% of the plant’s annual output. It is planned to supply the rest products to the Russian manufacturers of engineering industry. In future it would be possible to enter the international market.

Currently «Saturn» is the main Russian consumer of a large number of modern tools in connection with the overall modernization of the manufacturing capacities, equipping with the modern muli-function processing centers. According to the existing industry trend tools are a significant part of costs. Since we are the pioneers in our country, we pay significant attention to this project and want to create the up-to-date tool production not only for ourselves, but also for future innovation economy of Russia and primarily for the engineering industry – noted the CEO of  «Saturn» Yuriy Lastochkin.

The key project technology is deposition of the nano-structured coatings onto the tools. The technology was developed by Kurchatov Institute within the framework of the Federal Purpose Program. The project was recommended for financing by the Scientific and Technical Council on the 17th of July 2008.

This project started its way from the Federal Purpose Program, within the framework of which the main pre-production R & D took place. It appears as an ideal string in terms of achieving the objectives set by the government on commercializing the innovation projects - told Leonid Melamed, the CEO of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies.

The nano-structured coatings improve the tool wear resistance, which allows processing metals at higher speed and prolongs the useful life time of the tool. It should be noted that improvement of the technical characteristics (hardness, viscosity) of the tools with nano-coatings leads to significant increase in labour productivity and decrease production costs.

The nano-structured coating allows making tool regrinding up to 12 times. As compared to the uncoated tools, nano-structured coatings increase the amount of the metal removed by 2-2.5 times, and increase resistance between regrinding and cutting speed by 1.5-2 times.

The project has high financial efficiency. Project implementation would result in a creation of a competitive enterprise. Besides, creation of nano-coated metal cutting tools production would make a significant contribution into the increase of competitiveness of the Russian engine construction, said Sergey Polikarpov, Managing Director of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies.

Reference:

Russian metal cutting tool market remains small as compared to the global one. In 2007 the metal cutting tool consumption in Russia comprised 444 million US dollars, while the global world consumption reached 14 billion US dollars within this period. Demand for the metal cutting tools in Russia is satisfied mainly by import, which constitute 57% of the Russian market. The experts expect metal cutting tools consumption in Russia would growth with the annual average rate of 10% for the period from 2007 till 2010, such growth rate exceeds the global market growth rate, which constitute 6%.

«Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies» (RUSNANO) is founded by the Federal Law No.139-ФЗ dated July 19, 2007 for «realizing the state policy in the sphere of nanotechnologies, creating the innovation infrastructure in the sphere of nanotechnologies, implementing the projects on creating the perspective nanotechnologies and nanoindustry».The Corporation resolves this objective acting as a co-investor in the nanotechnological projects with significant economical or social potential. Financial participation of the Corporation at early stages of the project implementation reduces risks of their partners – private investors. The Corporation participates in creating the nanotechnological infrastructure objects, such as centers for shared use, business-incubators and funds of early investment. RUSNANO chooses the first priority directions for investment on the basis of long-term development forecasts (foresight). RUSNANO supervisory council approves project aimed at fighting cardiovascular diseases

On Thursday November 6th, the supervisory council of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies (RUSNANO) recommended the board of directors to approve the investment in a medical project aimed at the development, design and building of high technological scientific and industrial beta complexes for the production of medical technology.

The goal of the project is to establish a home-grown high-tech production of medical technology for cascade filtration of blood plasma and related technologies for treating a range of diseases by removing harmful substances and destroying viruses from blood.

The project has a great social value, since it is directed towards the treatment of a number of widespread diseases, such as atherosclerosis, ischemic disease, breast pang, forward heart failure and acute toxicosis, which contribute to a higher mortality rate in Russia than in countries with mature economy. Around 1.5 mln people die from heart diseases in Russia each year.

Plasma cascade filtration is a high-tech method of cleansing blood, which makes it possible to selectively remove only viruses and harmful proteins, which are the reason for disease, preserving useful components of blood normally present. Today, cascade filtration is performed in only a few developed countries (Japan, Germany and Italy) using highly expensive fiber filtration technology, which has inevitably led to its inaccessibility for the bulk of the population even in these countries. The proposed technology of cascade filtration on flat track membranes – a world’s first – will make it possible to radically reduce the cost of the procedure and to make this treatment accessible more widely.

The investment transaction will be done in the Russian Federation. The project company’s operating activity will also be situated in Russia. RUSNANO is to invest 1.29 billion rubles in private company Trekpor Technology. The project will be implemented by the company’s subsidiary Nanocascade, a resident of a special economic zone specializing in emerging technologies in the science town of Dubna, in Moscow region.

The project will be realized in three stages spanning 6.5 years:

the first stage – creation of the production complex between 2009-2011;

the second stage – business development using growing production capacities and output to planned production volumes 4.5 years after investment launch;

the third stage - search of strategic investor and RUSNANO’s gradual withdrawal from the project one year after completion of the second stage.

’The urgency and social value of this project are out of doubt,’ says RUSNANO deputy director general Andrey Malyshev. ’This unique project deals with several high-tech spheres: medicine, nuclear physics and manufacturing of tools. Besides its medical applications, nano-filtration of liquid and gaseous media is increasingly used in various industrial segments, which in future will allow Trekpor Technology to develop an entire range of filtration technologies on the basis of track membranes.’

’Expanding medical nanotechnologies into wider use is a case for nearest future,’ believes Vladimir Conanov, chairman of Trekpor Technology’s board of directors. ’Implementing innovative projects aimed at establishing the production of next-generation medical technology, capable of blood plasma nano-filtration down to separation of protein molecules – will make it possible to solve a number of serious problems currently standing in the way of forming an innovative system of medical care on a national scale. We are pleased that our partner in the project is such a solid institute of development as RUSNANO.’

RUSNANO, ONEXIM and the Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant establish the joint company to manufacture the new generation lighting products

The establishing documents have been signed by Anatoly Chubais, Director General of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies (RUSNANO), Mikhail Prokhorov, President of “ONEXIM Group” Ltd. and Sergey Maksin, Director General of the Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant (UOMP).

LEDs or light emitting diodes are semiconducting units emitting light when the electric current is passing through them.

LEDs were invented by Oleg Losev, a Russian scientist, who first discovered and studied the crystal diode fluorescence in the middle of 1920s. The developer of LEDs based on the multilayer nanometer heterostructures was member of RAS Zhores Alferov, who was awarded the Noble prize in 2000 for his works.

LEDs have no glass bulbs and filaments thus having the high mechanical durability and reliability. Absence of heating elements and high voltages guarantees high level of power and fire safety. Subminiaturization and light distribution built into LED allow for creating flat, compact and convenient for installation lighting devices.

The market of LED lighting products is actively developing and drives out other light sources. The world market of LED lighting products is growing at 37% per year as the growth of the world lighting engineering market (all light sources) reaches 5% per year. Nowadays LED lamps occupy already at least 3.5% of the Russian lighting systems market.

The world market of LEDs equaled $4.2 bln. in 2007 and is forecasted to reach the level of $12 bln. in 2012 growing at an average annual rate of 23%. The Russian market of lighting products comprised more than 50 billion rubles in 2007 and is growing annually by 13% on average.

At the present state of the Russian market, LEDs are mainly used in the light signalling devices (traffic lights etc.), for illuminating the architectural facilities, in automotive industry (headlights and taillights). The lighting products based on the traditional light sources will be most likely substituted with LEDs, at first, in the segments of HCS object illumination, street, commercial building and industrial object illumination.

The machines can be used both to produce bio-implants and surgical tools, and to form complex-shape parts from high-strength materials used in aircraft engines or energy turbines. At present in Russia there is virtually no production of precision machinery (Russia accounts for less than 0.1% share of the global precision machines market in 2008.).

For implementation a Project Company will be set up, where RUSNANO will be a co-investor and Titan-ESM will participate with a respective share split of 39.8%, 35.1% and 25.1%. Total amount of investment from RUSNANO side will be 154 million RUR. Funding will be provided in the form of investment in share capital and loans depending on the Project Company results.

According to the business plan, during the first year of the project’ implementation the following activities are planned: machines design and improvement, production area organization, staff training and manufacturing launch. From the second until the sixth year of project development, manufacturing capacity will be increased with an aim to reach annual production of 470 machines in 2015.

Project implementation will enable to apply the most advanced technological achievements of the Russian electrochemistry school and implement modern surfacing technologies in such high-tech industries as microelectronics, precise tools engineering, aerospace, energy generation, medicine, automotive and other sectors.

Titan-ESM was founded in 2004 at the initiative of the Ufa state aviation technical university (UGATU). The team successfully solves complex design and technological tasks together with the Scientific Research Institute (NII) of the problems of theory and technology of electrochemical machining. NII scientists have more than 30 years’ experience of work in the field of electrochemistry. During this time they have created new models of electrochemical machines, mastered and implemented more than a hundred technological processes, and obtained over 100 patents for inventions.

The Supervisory Council of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies approved the project on establishing the first closed-end mutual fund

The partner for this project was selected by the Corporation among the leading Russian business schools. It is the Moscow Management School SKOLKOVO, which will raise the 1 billion rubles adding to the fund’s chartered capital. The total fund amount will reach 2 billion rubles. The Managing Company of the fund will be Troyka Dialog.

From the opinion of the managing director, member of RUSNANO Board of Directors Dionis Gordin, the joint project of RUSNANO and SKOLKOVO is a striking example of melding the Corporation’s educational and investment objectives: the trust activity will be directed towards discovery of the commercial potential of the Russian nanotechnologies, providing the trust investors with high return of their investments as well as improving the quality of training in the sphere of innovative management and building of the efficient practice within the business school framework.

- One of the problems with venture business today is that there is a gap between a business idea and its implementation in the investment project, says Dionis Gordin. – In average, less than 10% of the projects submitted to the venture trusts pass through the primary consideration stage. It happens due to low quality of the business plans, calculations, marketing researches, scientific and technical substantiation etc. The venture trust will involve the students and tutors of SKOLKOVO into business planning and pre-investment preparation of the most interesting projects submitted into the Fund.

- We value the advantages and perspectives opening for our students thanks to cooperation with the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies, emphasized Andrey Volkov, Head of Moscow Management School SKOLKOVO. – Program SKOLKOVO MBA which will be launched in 2009 implies the development of own business projects by students. The best projects will obtain venture financing. The criterion of the project selection is their innovative component. We are sure that our cooperation with RUSNANO will motivate them for creating truly advanced technologies beneficial not only for their authors but for our country as well.
RUSNANO Supervisory Council approves the Corporation’s participation in the new composite materials production project

The Supervisory Council of Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies has approved the Corporation’s participation in the project aimed at organizing the industrial production of pre-pregs composed of carbon or mineral fibers impregnated with nano-filled bonding agent.

The pre-pregs are partially finished composite materials produced by filling the reinforcing fiber base with evenly distributed polymer bonding agent. The saturation of the agent is done in a manner that ensures the best physical and mechanical properties of the material. The pre-preg technology allows to form complex shapes with the minimum mechanical adaptation.

These materials are widely used in production of the fuselage, wings, cowls and propellers of the up-to-date civil aircrafts and helicopters. The composite materials allow to reduce the weight and, as a result, fuel consumption of the aircrafts while increasing the mechanical strength characteristics and lifecycle. Another perspective market for pre-pregs is the production of blades for the wind-driven power plants. Besides, the pre-pregs can be used both in automotive and ship building industries for producing the ship hulls and nonbearing elements of the car bodies; in construction industry, including for reinforcing the concrete structures; manufacturing the prostheses and medical devices as well as sports equipment.

The project involves the creation of the production facilities for manufacturing a wide range of pre-pregs at the production sites in Moscow and Saratov. According to the forecasts, the volume of the product manufactured by the enterprise in 2011 will be about 300 tons growing up to 4500 tons in 2018.

In order to raize the production, the portfolio company will be established with participation of RUSNANO (48% of the chartered capital), the co-investor CJSC HC “Kompozit” (26% of the chartered capital) and the company which filed the application CJSC “Unikhimtek-Kompozit” (26% of the authorized capital). RUSNANO will invest 192 million rubles into the chartered capital of the portfolio company as well as provide the loan in the amount of 3.06 billion rubles for the time period of 10 years.

As a result of the project implementation in Russia, an up-to-date competitive industrial production of pre-pregs based on the nano-structured fibers and various bonding agents will be created for manufacturing the polymer composite materials and products on their base. This will allow to improve the competitiveness of local materials and composites on their base and significantly increase the rate of their penetration in industry.

RUSNANO Supervisory Council approves the next generation flexible packaging industrial production project

The project application was submitted by Danaflex CJSC, Kazan, Tartarstan, which will be main contractor and co-investor. Research and development was provided by Kazan State University and Kazan State Technological University. The full title of the project is “High Barrier Polymer Film Technology Implementation and Production Setup to Expand Flexible Packaging Production”.

The project will be realized within the RUSNANO (49%) and Danaflex (51%) joint venture. RUSNANO’s share of the investments totals 1,200 million rubles and comes as a contribution to the portfolio company share. Danaflex will contribute a production facility located in Tartarstan and a total of 1,250 million rubles in cash.

The company’s products, high-barrier polymer film and flexible packaging materials, will be used primarily for packaging food, household goods, beauty and animal food products. High-barrier flexible film allows heating of food in microwave ovens without the need to remove the package. Another advantage is that it may significantly reduce the amount of preservatives used in food, and increase the shelf life of the foodstuff and other products packaged in the film. According to Dionis Gordin, RUSNANO’s Managing Director, the process equipment involved in the package production meets the best world practices. This type of high quality barrier film is now vigorously winning the foreign markets, whereas such production is not available in Russia. RUSNANO and Danaflex joint venture output will replace imported packaging in this segment, targeting both Russian and foreign customers, primarily the manufacturers of products that require packaging. According to Airat Bashirov, Danaflex Director General, this joint project will become a new step in developing flexible packaging market in Russia. In 2016 nano-packaging sales are expected to reach 20 thousand ton.

The Project execution timeframe is 2009-2016.

2009-2011 – Acquire and install the process equipment.

2011 – Commissioning and starting up the production.

2011-2013 – Running commercial production. Payback limit is 2016.

Russian multilayer flexible packaging market in 2008 is estimated to be 184 thousand tons (33.2 billion rubles). Imported products make 10% of the Russian market, and this is mostly hi-tech packaging, not currently produced in Russia. By 2016, experts expect 14% annual growth in flexible multilayer packaging consumption.

***

Today, the packaging can be divided into two types – rigid and flexible. Rigid packaging is well-established but less functional. Flexible packaging is booming due to a wide range of properties and diverse applications.

The term flexible packaging includes production, delivery, and processing of polymer films, aluminum foil and paper to be used together and separately. Basic products in this segment are thin-layered (mono-films) or combined polymers for obtaining multilayer structures containing cellulose (paper and hard paper) or thin aluminum layers, along with plastic.

The main advantages of the flexible packaging are its low weight, user-friendliness and greater power-efficiency during manufacturing compared to other packaging materials (metal, glass, etc.). In addition, flexible packaging requires less storage space, and transportation expenses are much lower as compared to traditional types of packaging.

The barrier properties of the film protecting from moisture, oil, grease, and petroleum products, domestic chemicals, gases, bacteria, and UV light, ensure food quality preservation.

Application: foodstuff retail packaging; modified atmosphere packaging, food preservation, consumer goods, hygienic products, domestic detergents, special-purpose non-food packaging for healthcare, pharmaceutics, etc.

Danaflex CJSC was founded in 2001 in Kazan. The main line of business is production of flexible packaging materials. The company is the largest flexible packaging manufacturer in the Russian market, it has offices in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Novosibirsk.

During its life, Danaflex has developed and introduced innovation packaging that became segment leaders, and also have won renowned international and Russian awards. At 2008 year end, Danaflex sales totaled 12.5 thousand ton of packaging.
RUSNANO and RENOVA to found a company for Russia’s largest production of solar batteries

The Supervisory Council of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies, RUSNANO, has approved the corporation’s participation in a project to produce solar modules using thin-film technology.

RUSNANO CEO Anatoly Chubais commented on the project: “We are talking about creating the largest base in Russia for the production of solar batteries. This is the most significant investment in alternative energy on the territory of the Russian Federation.”

A new company is to be established under the project at Khimprom’s industrial park in the city of Novocheboksarsk in the Chuvash Republic. The company will realize the entire cycle of production for solar modules. Its planned capacity is to be one million solar modules per year, the equivalent of 120 MW per year.

The core participants in the project are RUSNANO and RENOVA Group. Total investment in the project is 20.1 billion rubles. RUSNANO will contribute 3.7 billion rubles to the equity of the new company. In addition, the corporation will offer the project company a loan of 9.8 billion rubles. RUSNANO will hold a 49% equity share in the project company. RENOVA will own a 51% stake and will be responsible for development of the business.

The project is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2009 and reach the planned capacity in the fourth quarter of 2011. The company revenue in 2015 is estimated at 10.3 billion rubles.

RUSNANO CEO Anatoly Chubais noted that “a part of the project, the establishment of a major research center, whose expenses for equipment alone will equal one billion rubles, lends it a particular significance.” The center will work on increasing the effectiveness of the solar modules in cooperation with the Ioffe Physical Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The production of solar modules will involve the latest cutting-edge thin-film technologies developed worldwide. The technology of micromorph silicon thin-film solar modules developed by Swiss company Oerlikon Solar, a world’s leader in the solar energy market, is planned to be used as a basic technique.

“Establishing production of solar batteries is in line with one of the strategic goals of RUSNANO – to implement cluster projects that result in the creation of nanotechnology products, interrelated by manufacturing method or by sequence in the processing chain. Such projects create the backbone for formation of an innovative sector in the Russian economy,” said Mr. Chubais.

Earlier the Supervisory Council of RUSNANO had approved the Corporation’s participation in a project to establish Russia’s first large-scale complex for production of polycrystalline silicon and monosilane, which are raw materials for the manufacture of solar batteries. Additionally, the solar battery project will stimulate ancillary production within the territory of the Russian Federation, in particular the production of especially pure technical gases and special-purpose glass.

“This undertaking will not only become the starting point for creating a new industry in Russia’s economy – solar energy – but also stimulate the development of a number of related economic sectors,” noted Chairman of the Supervisory Committee of RENOVA Group Viktor Vekselberg.

The market for solar energy has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years. According to data from U.S.-based research company Lux Research, in 2008 the market reached $33.3 billion, or around 5 GW. In monetary terms the market has increased more than 11-fold since 2001. The market for silicon thin-film solar modules in 2008 was valued at 0.6 GW, but by 2012 it is expected to grow to 2.4 GW, which, in monetary terms, is growth from $3.8 billion to $8.6 billion.

Markets in countries in Southern Europe – Italy, Spain, and Greece – and Germany are primary targets for the sale of products. Avelar Energy Group (part of the RENOVA Group), which installs and adjusts solar modules in Europe, will handles product sales. In the long term, up to 15 percent of the solar modules are to be directed toward the Russian market.
RUSNANO and Italy’s Galileo Vacuum Systems Team Up to Produce Radio Frequency Identification Tags in Russia

The Supervisory Council of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies has approved the corporation’s participation in a project that will establish a hi-tech business for production of radio frequency identification tags (RFID tags) in Russia. These tags are the latest advance, replacing traditional bar codes in the registration of goods at retail and warehousing businesses. As part of the project, production will also be organized for metallized packaging materials and equipment to handle metal coating of rolled materials. The project will be undertaken jointly with Italian company Galileo Vacuum Systems spa.

RUSNANO and Galileo Vacuum Systems will establish a joint business in Russia to handle production. That business will own production facilities in Russia, Italy, and Serbia as well as owning production technology and know how. The total cost of the project is 43 million euros of which RUSNANO will contribute 21 million euros.

RFID (radio frequency identification) technology uses radio frequency electromagnetic light to read and record information on a small element, an RFID tag. The system – the tag, a reading device, and relevant software support – is used for identification and recordkeeping of objects, for example, packaged products during warehousing, distribution, and sale in retail networks. According to analyses by large Russian retailers Auchan and X5 Retail Group, the introduction of RFID systems can reduce warehouse expenses and decrease loses from theft by 40 percent. Products manufactured under the project – RFID tags – will contribute to the development of Russia’s food industry, retail merchandising, warehouse logistics, and other sectors of the economy.

The project will employ an innovative nanotechnology for selective metallization coatings that makes it possible to metallize any flexible surface, including selective metallization (by a pre-set configuration) with high output and low production costs.

“We regard the participation of Galileo in the project, and its willingness to transfer technology to the Russian company, as very important. In the future, the joint company plans to attract leading Russian research and development institutes to further modernize technology solutions. We shall implement their designs in our production,“ RUSNANO Senior Investment Manager Alexander Kondrashov said. RUSNANO has established a working group for study and development of the RFID market in Russia. RUSNANO CEO Anatoly Chubais chairs the group. Participants in the group include representatives from X5 Retail Group and Sitronics. The latter is one of the world’s leaders in the production of RFID systems and smart cards.

Still one more product from the new business will be metallized packaging (film and paper), which makes it possible to preserve various types of products for a longer period of time. Domestic production of metallized film and paper holds considerable promise: the Russian market for metallized packaging is only beginning to develop and about 80 percent of metallized film and nearly 100 percent of metallized paper is imported from other countries.
RUSNANO and Virial to set up production of nano-structured abrasive resistant parts

The Supervisory Council has approved RUSNANO participation in setting up the production of abrasive resistant parts using nano-structured ceramic and metal-ceramic materials. The project was initiated by Virial LLC, one of the Russian market leaders in abrasive resistant ceramic and metal ceramic parts and units for oil production, refinery and chemical industries. Siberian Organics CJSC will co-invest in the project.

The total amount of project investment is estimated at 1.6 billion rubles. RUSNANO will contribute 501.5 million rubles to Virial’s equity share. In addition, RUSNANO will provide the company a loan of 150 million rubles, and a guarantee for loans and credits up to 220 million rubles. The co-investor's contribution to Virial’s equity share will be 200 million rubles. To raise funds for the project, the company is borrowing from commercial banks as well.

The project will create a complete production cycle for the manufacturing of a variety of tribotechnical items (units exposed to friction and wear) made from nano-structured ceramic and metal-ceramic materials and meant for functioning under severe operating conditions, including pumping equipment. As compared to metals and polymers, these materials have a variety of important advantages, such as higher wear-resistance, a wider range of operational temperatures, and chemical stability. In this case, nano-structured materials increase the life cycle and reliability of industrial pumping equipment by 20-30%.

In addition, the company will release a line of ceramic and metal-ceramic cutting tools for processing metal and composite materials with a high level of hardness, strength, and heat resistance. Use of these tools on such materials will result in better performance of the processing equipment, accuracy and continuity of geometrical parameters in the processing of parts.

The pilot production of nano-structured parts will start in 2009. According to the project timeline, production is expected to reach its planned capacity by the end 2012 and exceed 3.7 billion rubles in output by 2015.

Virial LLC manufactures abrasive resistant parts and units based on ceramic and metal-ceramic materials and covers approximately 30% of the Russian market of parts and units for submersible oil pumps, competing in this segment mostly with foreign manufacturers. The Company performs in-house research and development, as well as cooperates closely with leading Russian and overseas R&D companies.

gallium-arsenide substrates, chips, and optical components based on vertically emitting lasers.

The primary products of the project will be chips and optical components based on vertically emitting lasers used in high bit rate optical transmission devices for local networks, active optical cables, supercomputers, and interconnects for the upcoming USB standards 3.0 and 4.0.

Corporation analysts predict that by 2014 the world market for optical components based on vertically emitting lasers will climb to $1.4 billion in revenue compared to the $300 million sold in 2008, this being a result of the replacement of copper interconnects by the faster, more compact and interference-free fiber optics.

With a chartered capital of 600 million rubles, the corporation intends to set up a St. Petersburg-based joint enterprise together with the technology developer and owner, VI-Systems GmbH (Germany), and an external financial co-investor. The corporation’s share in the project company will amount to 45.01%, VI-Systems GmbH – to 35%, and co-investor's – to 19.99%.

In addition, once tasks for the first phase have been completed successfully, the corporation will grant a loan of up to 500 million rubles to the enterprise for acquisition of epitaxial equipment required for expansion of production. Total project investment is planned to peak at 1.1 billion rubles.

Production startup is scheduled for the second quarter of 2011 with target capacity being reached in 2014 when expected revenues of the company will exceed 2.3 billion rubles.

As the Managing Director for RUSNANO Konstantin Demetriou has observed, the implementation of this project will allow for the establishment in Russia of a world-leading company in the global market of vertically emitting lasers and provide incentive for the country’s development of other related hi-tech products - from integrated circuits to active optical cables.

Scientific support for the project in Russia will be provided by the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute (St. Petersburg), Saint-Petersburg Physics and Technology scientific and educational center of Russian Academy of Science and the Institute of Semiconductor Physics of SB RAS (Novosibirsk).

VI-Systems GmbH., Germany, is a private innovation and research company founded by former members of the Technical University of Berlin and the Ioffe Institute. Company shareholders are made up of individuals and the Stars Innovation AG investment fund.
RUSNANO to invest in building a plant for manufacturing nano-vaccines and therapeutic biopharmaceuticals

A project for the production of vaccines and biopharmaceuticals has been approved by the Supervisory Council of RUSNANO. Project plans include development of two vaccines for human flu and bird flu and three biopharmaceuticals for treatment of cancer-related toxicity, boosting of the immune system and increasing the efficiency of antibacterial and antiviral drugs, and treatment of lower extremity ischemia and motor neuron disease.

RUSNANO and NTpharma intend to form a joint venture for putting the project to life. Research activity will be coordinated by the Gamaleya State Scientific Research Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences of RAMS. Scientific support will also be provided by the Research Institute for Influenza of RAMS, the Molecular Genetics Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, the Scientific Center for Neurology of RAMS, the Herzen Moscow State Oncology Research Institute (Federal Agency for Public Health and Social Development), the Petrovsky Russian State Surgery Center of RAMS, and other scientific institutions.

The project budget totals 1,547 million rubles. RUSNANO will contribute 237 million rubles to obtain a 49% share of the joint enterprise charter capital and will also grant a loan of 1,063 million rubles for a period of seven years. In addition, NTpharma will provide 100 million rubles to the chartered capital and contribute its intellectual property appraised by Deloitte & Touche at 147 million rubles.

The project launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2010 with target capacity being reached in the third quarter of 2012.

Two types of vaccines and biopharmaceuticals are planned for market introduction. The first type features self-assembling nanoparticles representing modified adenoviruses. While incapable of reproduction in living cells, these nanoparticles deliver the target gene. Using this gene, cells generate the protein needed to bring about a therapeutic effect or, in case of vaccination, trigger immune response. The second type of vaccine uses synthesized polysaccharide nanoparticles. Target protein molecules are attached to these nanoparticles with a special protein module (carbohydrate-binding domain). This technology allows for the generation of nanoparticles measuring 50-90 nanometers in diameter, the size necessary for recognition by cells responsible for primary immune response.

“Nanovaccines are more efficient than conventional vaccines in that they induce both humoral and cell-mediated immune response. They are also more convenient for usage as they may be applied in the form of nasal drops. The technology proposed would allow to reduce the time required for culturing vaccine strains from 60 to 28 days - vital when dealing with vaccines for pandemic flu strains,” emphasized one of the project originators, R&D Deputy Director of Gamaleya State Scientific Research Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology, Boris Naroditsky.

According to Olga Shpichko, RUSNANO’s Managing Director, production will be established at 10 million packagings per year in accordance with international GMP standards. Once the Russian market is saturated, the possibility for entry to the world market for flu vaccines will be open, a market currently estimated at $3 billion and growing by 18% each year.

RUSNANO invests in production of solar batteries

The Supervisory Council of RUSNANO has approved a joint venture project with Research-Production Enterprise NPP KVANT for the manufacture of solar batteries for spacecrafts.

The project will produce gallium arsenide-based solar batteries for satellites and space stations, with battery efficiency increased from 15 to 32% compared to silicon-based batteries. The new batteries are made up of three-junction solar cells consisting of up to 30 interleaving layers, each measuring 10-15 nm in thickness.

The batteries will be fully compliant with the requirements of global spacecraft manufacturers for solar power systems. The energy conversion efficiency of these batteries in space environment is estimated at 30% with an operational life of 15 years, making them competitive with the best designs available in the global market. The product’s high quality is complemented by a competitive price resulting from the lower production cost of solar photocells versus similar foreign imports.

To date, Russia does not manufacture its own multi-junction solar cells based on gallium arsenide. At the same time, state policy for space industry development stipulates that solar batteries for Russian spacecrafts should be manufactured in Russia. Both enterprises specializing in solar battery assembly (NPP KVANT and SATURN) currently import gallium arsenide solar cells from abroad. Thus, successful implementation of this project will help to achieve a vital goal for the national space industry – the establishment of its own complete production cycle for state-of-the-art solar batteries for spacecraft, significantly reducing its dependency on foreign imports.

Aleksandr Kondrashov, RUSNANO Managing Director, emphasized that this project aims for the protection of Russia’s interests in the space exploration program. Additionally, it provides a marked economic value, as solar cells (currently 100% imported from abroad) make up 70% of the cost of space solar batteries.

RUSNANO will provide NPP KVANT with a long-term loan of 550 million rubles for a period of five years. JSC Information Satellite Systems – Reshetnev Company, primary consumer of the project products, will also contribute a loan of 50 million rubles to fund the project.

Production will be set up in Moscow as an extension of NPP KVANT with the first products being released to the market in 2009 already. Target capacity is expected to be reached in 2012 with the production of solar cells measuring 240 m2. NPP KVANT has already signed contracts with several buyers to supply gallium arsenide solar batteries for the period of 2009 - 2016, covering 60% of products to be manufactured by the enterprise during this timeframe. Foreign spacecraft manufacturers are also considered to be potential consumers.

Research-Production Enterprise KVANT (Joint Stock Company), established in 2007, is a successor of Research-Production Enterprise KVANT (Federal State Enterprise) and is one of the enterprises subordinate to the RF Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos). NPP KVANT’s primary business is space photovoltaics. NPP Kvant is a leading organization in Russia in the field of development and manufacture of solar cells based on various semiconductor materials, as well as in the field of design, manufacture, testing, and provision of solar battery capacity for spacecrafts.
