NAHA, Japan — The Air Force said Thursday it has found cracks in two F-15 fighter jets stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa through an investigation following the crash of an F-15 in Missouri in November.
Since a second flight suspension order was issued Nov. 28 for F-15s worldwide, base personnel have checked 30 of the more than 40 F-15C and D jets at Kadena and found cracks in the longerons of two of them, according to the base’s public relations officials.
Following the Nov. 2 crash of a Missouri Air National Guard F-15C aircraft, the Air Force suspended F-15 flights citing a possible structural failure in the aircraft, and issued a third directive Monday to stand down all of the roughly 450 F-15 jets in the A to D models, excepting only the E model.
The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force also checked all its roughly 200 F-15 jets of models similar to the U.S. Air Force’s F-15C and D after the crash but found no cracks and would not be affected by the air force’s third directive, Japan’s Defense Ministry said.
