The US Air Force (USAF) has awarded General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GAASI) a USD370.9 million contract for the procurement of an additional 30 MQ-9 Reaper medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

There are about 104 Reapers in the USAF inventory, the first of which entered operational service in October 2007. The service has upgraded 38 of these to the Extended Range configuration. The MQ-1 Predator, on which the MQ-9 is based, is to be phased out of USAF service by the end of 2018.

It can be armed with a combination of AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles; and/or GBU-12 Paveway II and GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions.
