I'll tell you one thing: China has far more personal rights than USA has. Aslong as you don't get involved in politics, you can pretty much do whatever youwant in China. The USis the one with a nitpicking law for every little thing. In China, mostthings are negotiable. I'll tell you a story I experienced while living there.
A friend of mine, an American, has a Chinese wife. His wife was slapped aroundby a drunk guy one night while she was out walking her dog. When my friend gotword of it (he was out of town), he immediately called me and a few otherforeigners and we went to the hospital. To our astonishment, the guy whocomitted the assault was also at the hospital, waiting to pay her hospitalbill. When my friend saw him, he lost it and started beating the sh/t out of thisChinese guy RIGHT IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM. (we regretted not filming it later.Didn't think of it.) The cops came. Instead of hauling my friend off to jailfor beating a guy senseless in a hospital waiting room, the two sides came toan agreement. The cops decided, on the spot, that the assailant would no longerbe responsible for the hospital bill and charges, and my friend would not comeafter him again to beat him up. They signed papers right there in the hospitalroom, the Chinaman went for his stitches after the beating, and everyone wenthome. This was in Shanghai.Renji Hospital.
My point is that almost everything is negotiable in China. A little money helps too.But as long as people agree to things, the law stays out of it. You could neverdo that in the States. You would be arrested for assaulting someone in thehospital. INstead, the cops agreed that the guy had it coming to him forbeating his wife. I love China.
