Two survivors of the Tunisian beach massacre have come forward to insist there was a second gunman during the murderous attack which left 38 dead - as many as 30 of them British.

Kirsty Murray and Steve Johnson - who were in entirely different parts of the complex - have said independently of each other that they believe Seifeddine Rezgui was not the only gunman last Friday.
Mr Johnson, a retired police officer, says he saw a second man standing with Rezgui on the beach.

He claims this man, dressed in red shorts, was holding an automatic rifle and shooting the tourists along with the gunman in dark clothing.

The eye witness's account suggests that the gunman was not a 'lone wolf' as current reports state.
His account is backed up to an extent by Kirsty Murray, who was shot in both legs by a man she says was not Rezgui in a hotel corridor.

But she says it was not an automatic rifle, like Rezgui was using, but a smaller weapon.
Her father Neil said: ‘She believes there were at least two gunmen because she was shot at close range with a handgun.

'Both her and her fiancé have said there was more than one gunman. One person is not capable of doing that much damage anyhow.'

However, there is no actual evidence there was a second man shooting tourists during Friday's massacre, in Sousse.

Instead, Tunisian police are conducting a nationwide hunt for accomplices they believe helped, but 'did not participate'.

Yet Mr Johnson is unequivocal about what he saw - and was even told by a high-ranking policeman that the man he described was 'dead as well'.

Mr Johnson, of Leicester, said: 'We saw what we believe was a second terrorist. It was a guy in red shorts, walking down from the hotel into the pool area. He just had red shorts on, nothing else on his legs or his feet or his body.

'And he had an automatic rifle in his arms and people were just running from him.'

Mr Johnson continued: 'We know that he wasn't the original terrorist, the one in black, because my colleague, Mick Perry had actually seen that man, who he initially thought was a policeman but he saw him shooting down into people down on the beach.'

Mr Johnson also believes he saw the body of the gunman after the shooting had stopped.

He told the BBC: 'When we were coming back in to the hotel we'd in fact seen a guy who was dead under a sheet with red shorts on who was a native of that country.

'We put two and two together and I think we got it right....there was a second gunman.'
Miss Murray, who was at the Hotel Marhaba pool with fiancé Radley Ruszkiewicz, 29, when the shooting began, says her injuries were from a small-calibre weapon and not Rezgui’s AK-47.
But the nursery nurse, of Braintree, in Essex, was not injured on the beach, but in the hotel.

Speaking from the hospital where she is being treated, Mr Murray said: ‘She was swimming in the pool and she said she heard people shooting. She was with Radley and they started running toward the hotel.
‘They both ran down the same corridor and then a grenade went off in a really confined space.

'Radley got most of the blast in his legs, and she only got a bit of it so she kept running. And further down she ended up at a dead-end and that’s when he shot her in the legs, at close range. And then he went along shooting other people in the head and legs.

‘He was shooting women in the legs and men in the head – and he stepped back over her a couple of times but she played dead.'

He said his daughter and Mr Ruszkiewicz feared each other was dead when they were taken to different hospitals. They have now been reunited and are recovering at the Cliniques Les Oliviers in Sousse.

Jean, a grandmother-of-three who did not want to give her full name, said many of her fellow British guests at the Marhaba were convinced there was another gunman who came into the reception and started shooting at the height of the mayhem.
