The critical design review of the Geostationary Defence and Strategic Communications Satellite (SGDC) program was completed in December. During this evaluation, all of the systems and subsystems of the Brazilian-made product were examined in detail and were to ensure that the project meets requirements for manufacturing. The new satellite will be the first to be 100% controlled by institutions in Brazil.
The SGDC weighs 5.8 tonnes, will be positioned in orbit at an altitude of 35,786 km above the Earth's surface. It is expected that the satellite will be launched in the second half of 2016 and that it will have a useful life of 15 years. Once in orbit, it will have communications channels for exclusive military use, which will ensure complete security of the country’s strategic transmissions.
The project’s critical design review was held in Toulouse, France, with the participation of experts from Telebras, the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) and the Visiona company. Also attended Brazil’s Defense and Air Attaché in France, Colonel Antonio Ramirez Lorenzo, and the Military Attaché, as well as military personnel of the Brazilian Air Force’s Main Special Operations Center (Núcleo do Centro de Operações Espaciais Principal (NUCOPE-P).

"This was the last step before manufacturing begins of a satellite that will be extremely important for the Ministry of Defense and for Brazil. In 2015, buildings will be built where the SGDC will be controlled. One will be in Brasilia, at the Sixth Regional Air Command, and the other in Rio de Janeiro, at the Naval Radio Station," said Colonel Hélcio Vieira Junior, Commander of NUCOPE-P.
In addition to meeting the need for secure strategic communications of the Ministry of Defense, the satellite will facilitate the implementation of the National Broadband Plan (PNBL), bringing quality communication to the most remote regions of Brazil, which still depend on the construction of fiber optic routes to have access to the internet.
The satellite’s design and control program also calls for technology transfer, which will allow Brazil to master this type of knowledge, which will be disseminated in several domestic areas - especially to the defense industry.
