BEIJING (AP) — Chinese President Xi Jinpingdropped in unexpectedly at a traditional Beijing bun shop, where he queued up,ordered and paid for a simple lunch of buns stuffed with pork and onions, greenvegetables, and stewed pig livers and intestines.
Such visits are extremely rare — if notunheard of — for top Chinese leaders, who are usually surrounded by heavysecurity and are not known for mingling with the public other than at scheduledevents.

After spotting Xi on Saturday, fellow diners took photos of the president and shared them on China's socialmedia. State media reposted the photos ontheir microblog accounts, and the official Xinhua News Agency reported aboutXi's lunch on its Chinese-language news site.

"Had it not been for the photos, itwould be incredulous to believe Xi, as a dignified president and party chief, should eat at a bun shop," author Wu Xiqi wrote in an editorial carried bythe ruling Communist Party's official news site. "Xi's act has subvertedthe traditional image of Chinese officials, ushering a warm, people-first gustof wind that is very touching indeed."
On Sunday, the store welcomed long lines ofChinese, some posing for photos in the room where Xi was and others wanting toorder what he had bought. A group from southern Guangdong province whowere visiting Beijing had gone to have a look after hearing about Xi's visitonline.

The manager of the Qing-Feng SteamedDumpling Shop, who gave only her family name, He, said that Xi and a smallentourage arrived at the no-frills eatery in western Beijing at around noonSaturday without prior notification. She said that Xi paid 21 yuan ($3.40) forhis lunch.

"There was no special security measureduring his stay," the manager said. "Customers could freely enter andleave the restaurant, and many took photos with him."
In one photo, a chef posed with Xi, whocontinued eating his meal as the picture was taken.

Installed as China's presidentin March, Xi has sought to portray himself as being in touch with regularpeople, but has done so with scheduled visits to factories and homes.
In April, a Hong Kong newspaper reportedthat Xi had taken a cab ride in Beijing — also highly unusual for a top leader— but the excitement soon dissipated when state media denied the report.
Though a socialist country in name, Chinahas a deep-rooted hierarchal system that accords privileges to one's officialranking. In recent years, members of the Chinese public have applauded Westernleaders for their regular-person style to vent their disapproval of Chineseofficials' aloofness.
Some commentators have noted that Xi's teamhas been savvy in building his image.

At the very least, Mandarin has been anofficial language of the UN for decades whereas Japanese is only widely spokenin Japan. Whatever it is, it is always good to learn as many languages andcultures of many nations as possible. This will widen our knowledge andunderstand other people in this world.

TRY THE CHICKEN FEET STEW - YUM, YUM. OR,WATCHES MADE FROM CHICKEN FEET SKIN, VERY FASHIONABLE. DON'T BARF AT STEWED PIGLIVERS AND INTESTINES - SOME DON'T EVEN HAVE THAT TO EAT - FOR BREAKFAST,LUNCH, OR DINNER!

...stewed pig livers and intestines???
Now that's one hellva man!

Most, if not all, white men don't eat thehead or feet or internal parts of the animals. But for most Asians, they arecommon delicacies. Like the saying which goes..."One man's food, anotherman's poison".

Who says most white men don't eat thingslike that? Where are you getting your information from JM? Scrapple, souse, pickled pig's feet, liver, pate, sausage sells by the ton in the West.

All of my western friends including my Britbro-in-law & his families I know don't eat those internal organs, exceptfor certain parts. So as far as I am concerned, thosewho eat all that are a rarity.

The question we should be asking is:

Well it would probably be at least a littlebit more useful than all of those people that learned Japanese in the '80s.

At the very least, Mandarin has been anofficial language of the UN for decades whereas Japanese is only widely spokenin Japan. Whatever it is, it is always good to learn as many languages andcultures of many nations as possible. This will widen our knowledge andunderstand other people in this world.

What is the point? Mandarin is spoken in 2countries, China and Taiwan. Most of the Chinese diaspora speak other dialects.

Fluency in Mandarin can be quite usefulwhen ordering buns in Beijing restaurants.

I do not think President Xi's is meetingwith people to talk politics, or try to be something that resembles a WesternPolitician. Real people go to places where the food is reasonably price, andthey go there to eat. It would seem it was not a stage event, and no stupid speeches were made, and no promises were made to garner politicalsupport. The guys not a lawyer, so he we not try to B.S. people, no security, that is priceless.

On the other hand. he does not need tospeak to the people to find out what they want. He is not elected by them, heis selected by the other princelings, so he will tell the people what theywant. You can rest assured, PRC tool, that security was very nearby. LMFAO atyou tools.
