Chinese media criticize Japan over Senkakus

Chinese newspapers have denounced Japan for its nationalization of the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. China and Taiwan also claim sovereignty over the islands.

The Communist Party's official paper, the People's Daily, carried in its Wednesday edition an editorial called "Japan Should Stop Playing with Fire."

The commentary said Japan was presumptuous for claiming it doesn't want to hurt its relationship with Beijing while infringing on China's sovereignty. It said no one will be deceived by such obvious ploys.

The editorial also said Japan must not forget its history of aggression against China.

It added that Japan must bear responsibility for any grave consequences that result from its unilateral moves, suggesting that the Chinese government is set to take countermeasures.

Other Chinese newspapers have also been critical, running statements from the foreign ministry condemning Japan and carrying photos of anti-Japanese demonstrations. Newspapers in China rarely carry such photos.

Observers say the government had tried to contain the protests, but that it may have shifted its stance after Japan put the islands into state ownership by signing a contract with private owners to buy them.

About 100 people in Taiwan rallied in front of the building housing Japan's liaison office in Taipei, chanting slogans insisting that the islands belong to Taiwan.

The protesters included members of labor unions and representatives of a private group claiming ownership over the islands.
