BEIJING: Bhutan has sought China's support for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the term 2013-14. This was revealed by the Bhutanese government after its leaders held border talks with a visiting Chinese delegation in Thimphu on Friday.

"The talks were held in a warm and friendly atmosphere," the Bhutanese foreign ministry said in a statement. "It will provide the opportunity for the two nations to better understand each other's positions, which will facilitate an early and just settlement of the boundary issues."

The meeting discussed Bhutan's aspiration to serve as a non-permanent member of UNSC, elections for which are scheduled for October this year, said Bhutan's leading English daily, Kuensel.

An eight-member Chinese delegation led by vice foreign minister Fu Ying participated in the border talks just six weeks after the two countries established diplomatic ties for the first time. China is expected to bargain hard before helping Bhutan achieve its international ambitions in the form of a non-permanent seat at UNSC. Beijing might ask Thimphu to reduce its dependence on India, and discourage any future visit by the Dalai Lama to the country.

UNSC can't be guaranteed by China or for that matter India. They are trying to get the local support first and as China has got a veto power in security council it's quite obvious for them to secure their support. Seat on UNSC is decided by vote among more than 200 members in security council. Why are people worried with Bhutan talking to China. Every sovereign country has a right to decide its foreign policy.

Bhutan-China border talks have persisted since 1984. This was the 20th round of meeting between Chinese and Bhutanese delegation in BHutan's capital Thimphu. The outcome of all these meetings has always been the same - both parties agreeing to resolve the boundary disputes at the soonest possible. But it has never been resolved, and for sure, it will take many more years. Bhutan has toed the Indian line for all these years, for its own interest and reasons - Chinese invasion of Tibet being one principal factor. India is a crucial development partner of Bhutan and surely, Bhutan will not stake this friendship for a double-faced (if not many) China. The risk is too high. At least for now, Bhutan will maintain its southward orientation. For Indian government as well, I don't think this should be a reason for worry. Bhutan is growing up and out of the big Indian influence. It wants to establish its own identity in the international front. India must not view Bhutan's dalliance with China as a serious threat to its control/influence over Bhutan. It is only natural that Bhutan, as a nation of its own, must explore new friends and allies, opportunities and partners. Eventually, as a small country in between two suspicious/paranoid giants, Bhutan must at best try to balance a equi-distant between these two countries, or even play an effective go-between role in fostering positive partnership between India and China.

UNSC can't be guaranteed by China or for that matter India. They are trying to get the local support first and as China has got a veto power in security council it's quite obvious for them to secure their support. Seat on UNSC is decided by vote among more than 200 members in security council. Why are people worried with Bhutan talking to China. Every sovereign country has a right to decide its foreign policy.

Bhutan is Land of Gross National Happiness & The Land of Thunder Dragon, we don't fear because we didn't harm anyone. India and Bhutan do have good mutual understanding and cooperation but i don't admit that Bhutan is govern by Indian Policy, so plz don't create disharmony by saying that Bhutan don't trust India. Every country in the world trust each other but only thing is that Trust shouldn't be betrayed. Bhutan government should open Trade with China so we can have Sound economic reforms and built strong relationship. Bhutan and Tibet do have Trade Links Since 15th century so we shouldn't stop it and cooperation with India has be deepen,and That all we the Bhutanese People Yearns. Well, said Mr. Jigme. Bhutan and Nepal has same geographical situation, But Nepal is ahead the Bhutan in relation with china ... that means we are not against with india. We only thing economically not politically .. china come in nepal bring infrastructure, aid, road, many more but india always interup in nepal internal politics.

Bhutan-China border talks have persisted since 1984. This was the 20th round of meeting between Chinese and Bhutanese delegation in BHutan's capital Thimphu. The outcome of all these meetings has always been the same - both parties agreeing to resolve the boundary disputes at the soonest possible. But it has never been resolved, and for sure, it will take many more years. Bhutan has toed the Indian line for all these years, for its own interest and reasons - Chinese invasion of Tibet being one principal factor. India is a crucial development partner of Bhutan and surely, Bhutan will not stake this friendship for a double-faced (if not many) China. The risk is too high. At least for now, Bhutan will maintain its southward orientation. For Indian government as well, I don't think this should be a reason for worry. Bhutan is growing up and out of the big Indian influence. It wants to establish its own identity in the international front. India must not view Bhutan's dalliance with China as a serious threat to its control/influence over Bhutan. It is only natural that Bhutan, as a nation of its own, must explore new friends and allies, opportunities and partners. Eventually, as a small country in between two suspicious/paranoid giants, Bhutan must at best try to balance a equi-distant between these two countries, or even play an effective go-between role in fostering positive partnership between India and China.

Don't you get the message ? Bhutan does not trust India. They have seen what happened to Sikkim and they don't like it. The dragons tail looks more beautiful and the bottom smells sweeter than the monkeys of India. Haven't you heard it ..... when the Chinese emperor faats the Indians break out in chorus and say "How sweet" !

Perhaps Bhutan should just remain independent. The world needs pleasant, mostly independent nations too. Sniffing the dragons tail will only lead to a big red poo that will cover Bhutan.

The Chinese won't allow you to get too near for you to sniff their bottom. They can smell you from afar though and its not a pleasant smell ! I have seen them vomiting and coughing.
