Britain’s newest and most advanced nuclear submarine may have run aground because it was using out-of-date charts.
The £1.2 billion HMS Astute, which boasts radical new autopilot technology, became stuck in mud and shingle a few hundred yards offshore when it strayed into shallow water off the west coast of Scotland.
Last night the Royal Navy admitted it was investigating whether the embarrassing incident was caused by the use of old charts, which failed to accurately map shifting channels off the Isle of Skye.

The vessel is understood to have strayed several hundred yards outside the safe sea lane marked on Admiralty charts and was only 200 yards from striking a rock.
A Navy source said: ‘One of the things that is being looked at is if the charts were up to date with recent seabed changes in the area.’
HMS Astute has not been fitted with a traditional periscope but uses electro-optics to capture 360-degree images of the surface for analysis by the commanding officer.
Senior Navy sources said submariners on the Astute would have also used computerised maps of the area and printouts to judge the vessel’s safest path in the shallow and it is these that may have misled the crew.
The incident caps a grim week for the Navy, which celebrated the 205th anniversary of Lord Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar but lost four surface ships, its Harrier jump-jets and 5,000 sailors in defence cuts.
It seems Astute ran aground while attempting to transfer crew from shore during sea trials. There were no injuries and the Navy insisted it was ‘not a nuclear incident’.
Divers were yesterday assessing the damage to the vessel, which is based at Faslane.
A detailed investigation, known as a service inquiry, will consider if any crew were negligent and the submarine’s skipper, Commander Andy Coles, from Devon, could find himself in front of a court martial.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: ‘As it is a full investigation, it would be wrong to suggest that this particular individual would be singled out at this stage.’
