Two American tourists were arrested forcarving initials into Colosseum in Rome.

Before they were spotted, the women, 21 and25, were able to carve a J and an N into a brick wall on the first floor of thewest side of the Colosseum.

After carving the eight-inch high letters, the women posed together for a selfie.

The women used a coin to engrave the letters, La Stampa reported.

Other tourists saw what had happened andalerted security.

Police charged the women with 'aggravateddamage on building of historical and artistic interest', according to Republica.

After they were caught, the women didapologize to Piazza Dante police and Captain Lorenzo Iacobone.

They said: 'We apologize for what we did.

'We regret it but we did not imagine it was something so serious.

'We'll remember for a lifetime.'

Built in the first century CE, theColosseum is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural OrganizationWorld Heritage Site.

In order to make the  UNESCO list, asite must have a special cultural or physical significance.
The Colosseum, which is also called theFlavian Amphitheatre, was named after a colossal statue that once stoodnearby.

The structure 'accommodated games of greatpopular appeal, such as hunts and gladiatorial fights' until the end of theAncient Age, according to the Special Superintendency for the ArchaeologicalHeritage of Rome.

'In fact, it is the largest amphitheatrenot only in the city of Rome but in the world, able to offer stunning sceneriesas well as services for spectators.'

True Tory Nigel - You must be joking. WeBrits taught the rest of the world everything they know about delinquentvandalism!! Difference is that in the UK they don't even get punished!!

These two are stupid, but anyone who hastraveled is aware of the grafitti all over European buildings.

I'm an American and I have been veryfortunate to have visited and toured the Colesseum. Not once did it occur to meto inflict damage to this amazing place. Apparently, people from othercountries view all Americans as ignorant and entitled. Nothing could be furtherfrom the truth. Of course, we have our
fair share of idiots, but what countrydoesn't? It's pretty ignorant to assume these two imbeciles represent theentire US population!!!

Colorado Red, Colorado, 3 hours ago

PeteCook, many Scots find it insulting tobe called Britons. And FYI, many Americans don't like being called Yank -especially if they know the origin of the phrase.

Ole Solvik, Oslo, Norway, 6 hours ago

WTF is the point of apologize, they knewwhat they were doing, and knew it was wrong. And now they try to act stupid, people like this deserve a harsh punishment, jail and a big fine. Cant letstupid people get off the hook just because they are stupid..

You cannot deface something that has stoodfor thousands of years and expect not to be severely punished for it !!

I would like to apologize on behalf of TheUnited States and let the rest of the world know that not everyone here isstupid.

Barrett, VA, United States, 4 hours ago

craigsgirl - Why on earth would youapologize for over 300 million people when two did such a reprehensible act? They didn't do it because they're Americans...they did it because they, likemany others from many other countries, are ignorant and disrespectful.

mike197601, Hereford, United Kingdom, 3hours ago

Barrett has it right...they did it becausethey're foolish, historically ignorant idiots...NOT because they're american.

andu68, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 6 hoursago

let's hope they are not let free so easily. They should serve some time in jail to serve as a warning to others who wishedto do similar vandalism to historical monuments
