The British government needs Chinese money and is too scared to confront thecommunist state for fear of losing trade, according to the Dalai Lama.

达赖喇嘛说，英国政府需要中国的钱，并且害怕与这个共产主义国家的对抗会使贸易遭受损失。

Speaking about recent anti-governmentprotests in Hong Kong, the Buddhist spiritual leader said Britain's lack of intervention wasbecause 'the British government’s pocket is more or less empty'.
While he conceded that this approach was'realistic', he also said that the West has a 'moral responsibility' to helpbring democracy to China.

谈到最近发生在香港的反政府抗议，这位佛教精神领袖说英国之所以不干涉是因为“英国政府的口袋里面多多少少空了”。他说英国政府的这种做法是“现实主义的”，但是他也认为西方有“道德上的义务”将民主带到中国。

Speaking to BBC Newsnight, he said: 'China,economically, very much wants to join the mainstream of the world economy. Theyare most welcome.

'At the same time the free world has amoral responsibility to bring Chinainto the mainstream of democracy. China’s own people also want that …so therefore I think the whole world’s future has to be freedom anddemocracy.

“同时，自由世界有道德上的义务将中国带到民主的主流中来。中国人民也是这样想的，因此，我认为整个世界的未来应该是自由和民主的。”

'I think the free world has certainresponsibilities to stand firm over democracy and the rule of law and thefreedom of the press.'

“我觉得自由世界有责任在民主、法治和言论自由等议题上坚定不移。”

The Dalai Lama used to be bitterly opposedto China,having been forced to flee the country into exile in 1959 after a failedrevolution.

达赖喇嘛过去强烈反对中国，1959年革命失败后被迫逃亡。



However, since then his stance has softenedand he now advocates a 'middle way' with Chinese authorities which would see Tibet become autonomous, but remain part of China.

The Dalai Lama also suggested he may be the last Tibetan spiritual leader andwould rather the post faded into history than be passed to a 'stupid' successor.

He added that it will be 'up to the Tibetanpeople' to decide what happens after his death, a remark sure to anger China,which insists it has the right to chose his successor.

He said: 'The Dalai Lama institution will cease one day. These man-madeinstitutions will cease.

'Much better that a centuries-old traditionshould cease at the time of a quite popular Dalai Lama.'

He also noted that the position no longerholds political responsibility, as that was passed to an elected leader of theTibetan government in exile, Lobsang Sangay, in 2011.
