A Russian IL-76 transport was modified with the Elta Phalcon phased array system. Designated as A-50I, the aircraft is fitted with EL/M-2075 phased array radar, IFF, ECM/ESM systems, as well as advanced communications systems. The aircraft is believed to have the radars mounted in the nose and empennage of the airframe, where they will provide 360 degrees of coverage. Russian reluctance to provide technical specifications of the Il-76 required for the airframe modifications delayed the program. In early 2001 the Israeli government was forced to cancel the sale of the Phalcon systems to China, after the US applied heavy pressure. The project has effectively ended.
