History & Modifications

Nautilus:
On 17th January 1955, Nautilus moved under her own power for the first time, sending the famous signal 'Underway on nuclear power'. On 23rd July she left Pearl Harbour on what was then a top secret mission, Operation Sunshine, a journey to the North Pole under the ice. She arrived on 3rd August 1958, although the thickness of ice prevented her communicating her achievement to the world for another 2 days.

Her first refuelling took placein 1957, after some 62500NM, the second refuelling in 1959 after a further 91300NM, and the third and final refuelling in 1964 after another 150000NM.

She was decommissioned on 30th March 1980 and has been preserved as a museum at New London, Connecticut.

Scorpion:
Scorpion was lost in the Atlantic on 22nd May 1968. Her last report on 21st May gave her position as 50NM south of the Azores. But as no communication was expected from the submarine, it was not realized she was missing for another 6 days. A search was launched, but it was not until October that the research vessel Mizar discovered the wreck in some 10000' of water, about 400NM southwest of the Azores.

The cause of the disaster has never been published, if it is known. One popular suggestion is that one of her torpedoes exploded on board.

History & Modifications

All boats:
All surviving boats had all marks of torpedo replaced by the dual purpose Mk48 ADCAP model in the 1970s. From 1976 all were fitted with the Mk117 fire control system in place of the Mk113 to enable them to fire SubHarpoon missiles, of which four can be carried.

Barb:
Barb was at first named Pollack, then renamed Plunger, and again renamed before launching. She was decommissioned on 20th December 1989. Scrapping was completed at Puget Sound by 14th March 1996.

Dace:
Dace was decommissioned on 2nd December 1988. Scrapping was completed at Puget Sound by 17th January 1997.

Flasher:
Flasher was modified in the same manner as Greenling after the loss of the Thresher. She was decommissioned on 26th May 1992. Scrapping was completed at Puget Sound by 11th May 1994.

Gato:
Gato was modified in the same manner as Greenling after the loss of the Thresher. She was decommissioned on 1st October 1995. Scrapping was completed at Puget Sound by 25th April 1996.

Greenling:
Greenling laid down as a standard Thresher class boat. After the loss of the nameship, and while she was still under construction, she was towed to Electric Boat on 29th April 1964 to begin modifications under the SUBSAFE program, which involved lengthening the boat for new safety equipment.

In May 1968 Greenling was involved in the hunt for the lost Scorpion. She was refitted at Ingalls between February 1971 and March 1972. She was decommissioned on 18th April 1994. 1997

Guardfish:
Guardfish was decommissioned on 2nd February 1992 and arrived at Puget Sound for scrapping on 9th July 1992.

Haddo:
Haddo was decommissioned on 12th June 1991 and arrived for scrapping at Puget Sound on 20th June 1992.

Haddock:
Haddock was refitted between 1971 and 1972, and again between 1977 and 1978. She was decommissioned on 7th April 1993.

Jack:
Jacks contrarotating propellers proved successful, but the extra expense and complexity were considered to outweigh the advantages, and a single propeller replaced them during refits. She was decommissioned on 7th July 1990.

Permit:
On 28th March 1963 Permit was the first submarine to fire the SUBROC AS missile. She was decommissioned on 18th July 1991.

Plunger:
Plunger was originally to have been named Pollock. She was decommissioned on 3rd January 1990.

Pollock:
Pollock was decommissioned on 1st March 1989.

Thresher:
Thresher was lost with all hands on 10th April 1963 some 200NM east of Boston. She was conducting deep diving trials with 17 civilian technicians on board, and was accompanied by ASR-20 Skylark. Communication by underwater telephone was lost and the Skylarks communications crew described hearing a noise 'like air rushing into an air tank' followed by silence.

The wreck was eventually located in some 8500' of water, split into 6 major sections. It seems that a seawater pipe fractured, tripping a circuit breaker panel. The reactor shut down automatically, and could not be restarted before the boat sank too deep and part of the aft hull collapsed.

Tinosa:
Tinosa was decommissioned on 15th January 1992.
