Senior senators have downplayed the possibility of Congress passing a China currency bill in the short time that lawmakers will be working before the Nov 2 congressional elections.
But opponents of the bill, who say it would cause a serious rift with Beijing, fear a vote in the House could increase pressure on the Senate to act.
In an interview with financial television network CNBC last week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she thought it would strengthen Obama's hand in dealing with the Chinese for Congress to pass a currency bill.
