While there have been civilian flights previously, it is hoped that the airport’s renovations, along with the larger aircrafts, will usher in a new era of commercial air travel.

Han travelled with a military wife visiting her husband stationed on the island. She expressed her hopes that traveling to the islands in the South China Sea would now be easier.

Officials voiced their hopes that the flights would also bring a better quality of life to the people living on the island, especially during this festive time of the year.

海南日报永兴岛2月6日电（记者周元）明天就是除夕了，在这举国欢庆、万家团圆的日子里，省委书记罗保铭今天率海南省党政军慰问团来到三沙市政府所在地永兴岛，亲切慰问“舍小家顾大家”的驻岛军警部队官兵，称赞他们是“守卫祖国南大门的钢铁长城”。他同时还看望了守岛的广大干部职工、建设者及三沙居民，现场调研了三沙基础设施和政权建设，希望三沙市委市政府再接再厉建设好美丽三沙，争创军民融合、资源节约、生态良性循环、海岛风格的“四个典范”，坚决守好祖国南大门。
上午10时许，飞机徐徐降落永兴军民合用机场。永兴岛主干道北京路两旁挂满红灯笼，超市也已准备好充足的年货上架，一股浓浓的年味儿扑面而来。罗保铭前往三沙市党政办公楼，与值班的干部职工一一握手，送上省委省政府和全省人民的关怀与祝福，并通过视频向分布在三沙各岛礁的驻岛军警官兵和机关干部问好。
作为浪花上的“兵市”，营区里“爱国爱岛，乐守天涯”的醒目标语展示出军民携手共建三沙的决心与担当。罗保铭代表省委、省政府和省军区向三沙警备区、西沙某水警区等广大驻市部队官兵致以崇高敬意和亲切问候。他表示，三沙设市是党中央的英明决策，3年多来三沙市的基础设施建设、政权建设快马加鞭、齐头并进，取得了骄人业绩，这些都离不开驻岛军警部队官兵的艰苦努力，“你们常年守卫着海岛，战斗在祖国维权维稳的第一线，为守卫海岛付出了牺牲、作出了贡献。你们是守卫祖国南大门的钢铁长城！”
永兴码头二期项目建设热火朝天，垃圾、污水等环保处理中心正式启用，海水淡化厂、发电厂加紧建设。商业街上，理发店、咖啡店、水果店等相继开业，方便了住岛人员生活；农贸市场果蔬生鲜品种丰富、价格优惠；三沙市人民医院启用，实现小病不出岛，而“军人优惠”的招牌也随处可见……每到一处，罗保铭都详细了解项目建设及投入使用后的运行情况。他表示，在中央和习总书记的英明决策和亲切关怀下，在各级党委政府的大力支持下，三沙设市后基础设施建设和政权建设上了一个大台阶，在南海的常态维权上发挥了重要作用。
