Pakistan to sell more ATGM to Malaysia
Pakistan Ordnance Factories delivered to Malaysia the first batch of HJ8C in 2004, and negotiation on the export of a new batch of the missiles is now under way. Pakistan says they have obtained HJ8C from China, but the warhead of the missile is designed by Pakistan’s own experts independently. Pakistan claims that BAKTAR SHIKAN (HJ8C) has an effective range of 3,000m, the penetration power of its standard warhead is 500mm HRA, tandem warhead 600mm HRA, firing rate 2-3 rounds/minute, average flying speed of the missile 220m/s, weight of the weapon system 25kg, weight of the missile 11.2kg, length 875mm, diameter 120mm, wing span 320mm. The IR goniometer has an length of 480mm long, width 150mm, height 280mm, and field of view of sight 6 degrees.


China-made HJ8C weapon system weighs 25.2kg. Kanwa’s analysis indicates that in terms of the reduction of the overall weight, Chinese weapons produced in Pakistan and Iran has done better jobs. The source from Pakistan Ordnance Factories told Kanwa that currently Pakistan Army intends to obtain even longer range anti-tank missiles. Consequently, it is no longer a priority for China to promote to Iran MBT or anti-tank missiles. The Chinese experts also acknowledged that Iran did a better job than China in reducing the weight of light weapon systems. For instance, Iran-made RPG anti-tank rocket is lighter than the Chinese equivalents.



The purpose of displaying HJ9 ATM at IDEX 2005 is perhaps to promote the China-made anti-tank missiles to UAE. UAE was one of the first countries to use HJ8A, and has not ordered new batches of the missiles since the initial deal.
