Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which runs special trains between pilgrim destinations, planned a train from Tirupati to Varanasi via Bhubaneswar. The special train left Tirupati around 7pm on Tuesday and reached Vijayawada at 8.30am on Wednesday. Around 1pm, the train chugged into Kazipet station in Warangal, even as the bewildered passengers looked on helplessly.

The mistake was noticed only after a divisional operations manager in Secunderabad swung into action and asked the authorities at Vijayawada to revert the train to Vijayawada for its onward journey to Bhubaneswar via Vizag section. Since it was a special train, many of the on-duty staffers were not aware of the train schedule either.

The authorities at the Guntakal division (under which Tirupati station functions), who handed over the train to Vijayawada division officials at Renigunta station, had wrongly mentioned the destination station code resulting in the chaos.

They mentioned the code of Bilaspur station (BSP) instead of Bhubaneswar (BBS) during the handing over of the train chart, leading the officials at Vijayawada to allow the train to take the Warangal route for journey to Bilaspur. The train left Gudur station around midnight.

But once Vijayawada division cleared the signal for the special train, we allowed it to travel back,"he said.

PS：估计大伙快被印度地名搞迷糊了，为了让大家更加直观明白这件事情的离谱程度，特地说明一下。这列火车是9月7日从印度南部蒂鲁帕蒂市（Tirupati）开出的，本应该开往东部城市布巴内斯瓦尔（Bhubaneswar），然而它却向印度中部的瓦朗加尔（Warangal）开去，那里离布巴内斯瓦尔有980公里。在此期间，这列火车经过了三个铁路区段，行驶了近千公里，却没有一名乘务人员注意到火车行驶方向错误。

Here was a prescription for disaster just because the code BBS was received as BPS. How come the egg-heads in Railways could not think of providing redundancy of information so that multiple data fields need to be correlated before any vital decision regarding route is taken. Does it mean, even transmission errors are not verified for integrity in this age of digital communications in our Railways. This is a serious matter fraught with the safety of lives and property. I hope the top brass wakes up to the need for secure data transfer design in this age of digital communications. Prof. Sharma

Even with my limited knowledge of railway operations it would unliley to lead to an accident as the train would not have been able to enter the section unless the line and signals were clear and set for that route. Even if its traveling to the wrong destination it is still protected by signal etc, unless it has passed signals at danger.

啊3再3他的火车也是要调度员调度的，也是要车站值班员准备进路的，即便调度员、车站值班员都是糊涂蛋可司机也要下班换乘吧，很难想象走错径路有980公里期间机车不进库，司机不换乘，就这样一路错下去
走错路的公交车我坐过，太搞笑了。还好不是赶时间，大家都很宽容，呵呵。
