As a journalist, I spent time with the mujahideen in the mountains of Afghanistan during their war against the Soviet Union. These are an ancient people filled with a wisdom that most westerners will never fathom or understand. We have no right to be in their country. It is naive to ever believe they will welcome or appreciate our presence. And now the burning of the Koran and a massacre. It's time to leave. Let us bring our soldiers home and help them heal. Let us learn a lesson as a nation, lessen our hubris, expand our global awareness, get over our self-centeredness and cease our aggressions.

"The Taliban threatened vengeance, as the insurgents often do after Western actions they depict as atrocities". I don't think 'depict' is the appropriate word here. This situation was just plain old atrocious. We don't need anyone to put it through the filter of subjectivity. Let's call it what it is and not soften the awfulness of what happened by acting as if atrocious is just the Talibans opinion.

We are just there stealing in the first place, so doesn't it make sense that one crime would beget many others?
Haven't the military contractors extracted enough trillions from the American people already? Hasn't the military killed enough civilians and ruined the lives of enough soldiers yet?
We were supposed to be going there for one purpose, to get Osama Bin Laden. For basically a police matter, we have spent all those trillions, and killed all those countless thousands, and what is keeping us there? the gravy train of it all? Let's leave there now.

The media has us focused on Rush Limbaugh and contraception when we really need to be thinking about the fact that the US is slowly considering a war with Iran. 2012 seems a lot like 2002, the year before the Iraq invasion. I really don't want this happening again.

"Following the attacks, the Taliban threatened vengeance, as the insurgents often do after Western actions they depict as atrocities."

This phrasing is troubling. Regardless of political tensions, and American attitudes towards Afghanistan, no one is "depicting" the random slaughter of innocent men, women and children as an atrocity. It simply is one. To cast it as up for interpretation is a reflection on the frequently American stance that we are the good guys regardless of our actions. American exceptionalism at its worst.

I believe the White House should have issued much stronger language calling this an atrocity and asserting in no uncertain terms that the perpetrator would face punishment. It's hard to imagine an "investigation" somehow revealing that this was an acceptable act, and hard to understand why it's so politically incorrect to avoid and deny blaming an American for such atrocities. It's easier to understand in such circumstances why the Afghan people would lean towards insurgency against the American hegemony that treats such a tragedy as a bad day for public relations and nothing more.

What does the general mean when he says these killings were an "isolated episode?"
"Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, the NATO spokesman, expressed his 'deep sadness' and said that while the motive was not yet clear, it looked like an isolated episode."

From the same article:

1. "...the killings occurred two days after an episode in Kapisa Province, in eastern Afghanistan, in which NATO helicopters apparently hunting Taliban insurgents instead fired on civilians, killing four and wounding three others..."

2. "The attack on Sunday may complicate that issue, because it bore some similarities to the night raids carried out by coalition forces in Afghanistan."

3. "The shootings also carried some echoes of an attack in March 2007 in eastern Afghanistan, when several Marines opened fire with automatic weapons, killing as many as 19 civilians..."

Apparently "isolated episodes" can happen frequently enough to encourage denial of the atrocities of war.

I grieve for the families and the fallen in this incident, but at the same time I have to wonder why there will be any uproar at all!? Lone gunman goes off his nut and kills a bunch of people that did not deserve to die. He'll be tried and punished, and maybe at some point we all will find out why this happened. In the meantime, the Taliban in Afghanistan, and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan can walk into towns and villages left and right, rape, kill, and torture their own countrymen, women and children and that seems to be perfectly alright with the same Afghans who will be out there trying to attack any American available to avenge these deaths. Just once it would be nice to see the Afghan people rise up against their own aggressors in their own country. The Americans and NATO forces did not create an Afghan country where people had to fear for their lives every single day, from their own brothers and government. It was there when we came and it will be there when we leave because in all Islamic countries, leadership starts and ends with fear, threats, and reprisals for any who do not fall into line. Bin Laden has been found and dealt with. That was the mission. It's done. Country building is up to those who live in that country, and we just get in the way because our two cultures do not mesh well. If the Afghan people are to ever be successful in beating back their own criminal elements, then we will have to be out of their way.

If I hear Obama refer to these men -- among them being people who kill "the enemy" and urinate on their bodies, kill randomly and pose with the bodies and cut off fingers and ears of the dead for sport and trophy, massacre innocents and beat prisoners to death (as was doen a number of times in Bagram) or burn the holy book of the people they are suppose to protect -- I think next time I hear Obama or Clinton refer to "our troops" as heros, I am going to be sick to my stomoch.

I believe this may be the impetus to get out of Afghanistan NOW! i am very sorry for the innocent victims in Afghanistan as well as the servicemen who were killed after the accidental burning of the Quoran! There is no doubt in my mind that the army sergeant who confessed to these murders is a victim of PTSD. I am sure that there are many, many others who may be on the edge. This should be the turning point to vacate Afghanistan ASAP. I, for one, am writing to President Obama as well as my congressmen to express my views, and I urge other concerned citizens to do the same. This has gone on long enough, and there can be no doubt that if we continue to stay in Afghanistan the situation there will deteriorate rapidly, resulting in more bloodshed.

Ok, I don't uphold anyone killing anyone. This soldier included. But it seems strange American lives can be taken over the burning of a book ( one example) , Taliban whereabouts can be hidden by the Afghani people to assist in the taking of American lives.
But somehow its only wrong if its an American who crosses the line? Their all crossing the line.

As far as I'm concerned, at this point, America needs to pull out of the middle east. Build its own defenses to a level not seen in history. And I mean the sort of lean mean machine Clinton had pressed for not the defense stock padding sort we've had since Clintons endeavors were thrown to the wind by the following administration.

The middle east countries want to self implode? Fine, let them do it. This includes Israel who has been pitching for war for some time now.
I'd rather see america become much more self sustaining than it currently is. More neutral than it currently is.
The only reason America continues to involve itself in every single disturbance around the world is padding the defense stocks. Enough is enough.
We need to go green on a major scale. Break our reliance on foreign fossil fuels. I don't mean tap ours and leave our reserves empty. Its not a renewable resource so we better start thinking to the future.

Its time for America to move onward and upward. Leave yesterdays dependency behind. Yes, it costs. But how many generations do we kick this can down the road? Its time to do whats needed.

Its time for America to move onward and upward. Leave yesterdays dependency behind. Yes, it costs. But how many generations do we kick this can down the road? Its time to do whats needed.

CNN,FOX
I know several people who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. They received heavy doses of drugs before being shipped out. While it is not public knowledge what those cocktails were, it seems clear to me that some of them were psychiatric. Now, if you put two and two together and remember the whistle-blowing about such drugs a couple of years ago, by now it is clear that those drugs are likely to cause more damage than good. Shipping the same people back over and over has been covered even by the media in recent years, yet when Americans were checked out in 2006 or so, only one in three young people were physically fit for military service. I keep wondering how many of the remaining 33% would have been willing to go overseas to die for a reason that is still unclear. It seems that the American taxpayer is the primary victim of these wars, and corporations come out as the sole winners. (Did you know that in the past 10 years, we spent $20 billion a year in Afghanistan only to air condition military tents? Did you know that 92% of that money could have been saved by using insulated tents? -- source: TIME Magazine -- Somehow, nobody wanted to save that money. Sure enough, others did want to make it...)
