Northern Fleet Met Motherland's Defenders' Day with Good Results

Northern Fleet (NF) mariners met the Motherland Defenders' Day having improved intensity of combat training almost on 40 per cent comparing to analogous period of the last year. That is mostly because of successful activities of NF carrier group deployed in the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea.

Flight time of NF air crews has been grown more than on 130% in the winter training period. Coastal and ship-based pilots have carried out over 500 sorties. They patrolled air space over the Barents, the White, the Norwegian, the Mediterranean seas and the Atlantic Ocean. They performed various flight tasks including bombardments of naval ranges in the Barents Sea using air-based ASW weapons.

In 2011, crews of NF nuclear-powered submarines successfully launched 8 ballistic missiles including four test launches of SLBM Bulava. One of them was 2-missile salvo launch performed by SSBN Yury Dolgoruky.

NF coast defense troops held field drills and practice firing by armor vehicles, large-caliber self-propelled artillery systems, mortars, and grenade launchers. Inter-branch cooperation and joint training between reconnaissance units of NF marines and 200-th Infantry Brigade of Western Military District have been improved. Assault battalion actively conducts airborne training. Few days ago, automobiles and armor vehicles completed a 400-km march.

Northern Fleet will face critical tasks in the near-term prospect. The fleet is preparing for international exercises Pomor 2012, Barents-2012, and Northern Eagle 2012. Also, NF mariners will accomplish some tasks overseas; among them is anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden.

Northern Fleet (NF) submarine commanding officer Capt 1 rank Alexei Dmitrov was awarded title Hero of the Russian Federation.

Capt 1 rank Alexei Dmitrov is one of few submariners appointed nuclear-powered submarine's commanding officer at the age of 32. Since his appointment in 2005, he has carried out 8 long-range cruises including those in iceberg-risky regions. In 2006 and 2009, submarines commanded by Capt 1 rank Dmitrov ranked first in Russian Navy. In 2009, the crew led by Dmitrov won three Navy Commander's prizes in combat training competitions among submarines.

Capt 1 rank Dmitrov was awarded medals "For Military Merits", "For Service to Motherland" 2-nd grade, and other decorations.

He became 30-th Hero of Russia at Northern Fleet and 14-th submariner officer deserved that high title.

Northern Fleet (NF) will delegate large ASW ship Admiral Chabanenko, rescue tug, and naval aircraft (fighters Su-33, ASW airplane Il-38, and ship-based helicopter Ka-27) to attend the Pomor-2012 Russo-Norwegian joint exercise which is to be conducted in May 2012.

Taking part in the exercise planning conference held late Feb in Bodo, Norway, NF delegation presented own concept of various training scenarios. In particular, apart from traditional joint maneuvering, communication, and interaction drills, Russian party suggested anti-terror drills with gun firings, and interaction during joint search-and-rescue operations.

The final plan of the Pomor-2012 bilateral naval exercise will be agreed at the next planning conference in Severomorsk in April.

Russia and Norway are going to conduct the Pomor joint exercise for the fourth time. Main objective is to practice interoperability between Norwegian and Russian naval and air forces in the Arctic.

In 2010, the exercise was resumed after a 16-year long break, and now it is held on the annual basis. Last year, Russian large ASW ship Vice Admiral Kulakov and Norwegian frigate Helge Instad attended the Pomor-2011 exercise, as well as helicopters and ASW airplanes of Russia's Northern Fleet and Norwegian Air Force.

Northern Fleet Ship-Based Aviation Practices on Coastal Airfield

Having returned from deployment in the Mediterranean Sea, pilots of 279-th Ship-Based Fighter Regiment started training flights from coastal airfield Severomorsk-3.

Pilots of deck-based fighters Su-33 and training airplanes Su-25UTG are recovering flight skills in polar conditions after more than a two-month break. Flights are held in extreme weather conditions.

Ship-based pilots have carried out four flight drills now, including night ones. During the flights, they perform aerobatics, practice interception of fast-speed high-altitude targets, air engagement, and use onboard armament against land targets.

Earlier on, Russian naval pilots participated in the long-term deployment, performed 15 flight drills and about 150 landings of heavy fighters Su-33 on the deck of aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov. They held over 20 mock air combats and nearly same number of target interception drills.

Northern Fleet Marines Use New Armor Vests

Outfit of Northern Fleet (NF) marines serving in reinforcement units on board surface ships now includes new armor vests. Specific feature of the new individual protection means lies in the fact that, apart from protective functions, they may serve as lifejackets.

Floating armor vest is a new-generation personal protection equipment integrating several functions. It is equipped with a special rescue system. When a serviceman wearing such vest falls into water, the system automatically fills special sections with gas providing face-up position. The vest's pneumatic system has positive buoyancy of 25 kg making possible to hold an armed serviceman afloat.

"Advanced ergonomics allows marines to effectively use that protection vest in search operations onboard vessels suspected of illegal activities and during anti-piracy operations", said NF Coast Defense Troops Commander Colonel Andrei Guschin.

At present, NF Marine Regiment has already received required number of floating armor vests for units serving on board surface ships during long-range cruises and anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden.
