航行中的航空母舰就像海中的一座岛屿，因此总会招引一些小鸟驻足休息，而随着航母远离海岸，这些小鸟就不能再飞回海岸，而只能在船上安家了。

在2008年3月17日向波斯湾行驶的路途中，服役于美国海军尼米兹级核动力航空母舰 哈里 S 杜鲁门号的美国海军三等航空勤务士官 Alex Dieringer 用手支撑着一只名叫“Fod”的鸣角鸮。这只鸣角鸮是在一架F/A-18大黄蜂战斗机的左起落架舱内发现的，当时这架飞机在做例行的起飞前检查。
