What "could have been"?
Iraq was not a significant threat to the US. It didn't have the WMDs.
Bush and cabinet members lied when they told us they knew Saddam had WMDs and Rummy even told us we knew exactly where they were located.
Bush also lied when he told us he was a man of peace and would only invade Iraq as a "last resort".
Bush also lied (i.e. deliberately presented as true something he knew to be false) about the whole yellow cake fiasco as a way to get us into the war.
Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 except that when 9/11 happened the Bush administration decided that with the American people scared, it would provide good cover for the invasion of Iraq that they had been planning before Bush was ever elected.
Was it worth it? We get nothing positive in exchange for only several Billion dollars, several thousand Americans dead, tens of thousands of Americans seriously injured and hundreds of thousands if not millions of wasted person-years. No, it clearly wasn't worth. In fact, it was a worse disaster to the US than the 9/11 attacks themselves. George "Our troops are cannon fodder" Bush ought to stand trial as a war criminal.

What a waste. It was worth zero, nada, and we are still there and we will be still fighting and Ricks in the Gamble says the worst is yet to come. Congress, Bush and now Obama need to be held responsible. And, ironically Iraq caused the present conditions in Afghanistan by taking too much from Afghanistan when we had it under some control. Someone should be tried and shot.
