The second explosion killed Wood, Hansen said.<BR><BR>Wood was commander of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the 184th Regiment of the California Army National Guard, Hansen said.<BR><BR>The Army would not confirm the death after hours Friday and said deaths are made public 24 hours after next of kin was notified.<BR><BR>Wood's father Jimmy, also retired from the Air Force, described his son as a "people person" who loved the Army.<BR><BR>Wood was stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga., and took over the California Guard unit in Iraq. He had sent his last e-mail to his father Sunday, four days before he was killed.<BR><BR>"We've had a few teary moments," Jimmy Wood said.<BR><BR>Hansen said his brother supported the war in Iraq.<BR><BR>"He said the news coverage does not portray the real picture, that there were numerous successes over there," Hansen said.<BR><BR>Wood had deployed for a 12-month tour in January and was stationed in the Baghdad area, Hansen said. Jimmy Wood said his son had escorted ballot material until the morning of Iraq's constitutional referendum.<BR><BR>Hansen said Wood enjoyed golf and rode horses he owned. He also was a Florida State University fan and attended Everitt Middle School and graduated from Rutherford High School in 1979.<BR><BR>Wood is survived by his wife and daughter.</P></FONT>
