Disturbing videos and photos posted on social media claim to show Syrian rebels using caged prisoners as human shields against Russian and Assad regime airstrikes.

The images, shared Sunday by social media accounts affiliated with The Free Syrian Army, show prisoners being paraded in the streets and being used as human shields in areas bombed by the Syrian regime and the Russian Air Force. The social media posts said the prisoners were being held in eastern Ghouta, a countryside of Damascus.

The prisoners allegedly belong to the Alawite ruling sect to which Syrian President Bashar al-Assad belongs. Over the weekend, at least 70 people were killed in a missile attack in Douma, another countryside near Damascus, Reuters reported.

The decision to share images of caged prisoners highlights how desperate the Syrian rebels are to draw attention to their cause. Several of the clips seemed scripted, suggesting the effort may have been more of a publicity stunt than a genuine effort.

“We are asking the regime and the Russian Air Force not to bomb, because we are here,” said an allegedly Alawite women inside a cage, in one of the videos. “If the people from the Free Syrian Army will die, we will die together with them,” she continued.

This is not the first campaign of its kind. In February, young children were dressed as Islamic State hostages and put in a cage with slogans condemning the Syrian president.

Translation: “The Syrian rebels take revenge for the martyrs in Douma, 100 cages were placed in all Ghouta with prisoners of the Syrian regime, their women and children.”
