Detectives are searching for a homeless West Australian man over the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found naked and battered in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens on Saturday morning.

The woman, aged in her 30s, is believed to be from China and was in Australia working in the hospitality industry. But she has yet to be formally identified as police are still trying to contact relatives overseas.

Her death is being treated as suspicious and homicide squad detectives are investigating whether she was sexually assaulted in her final hours, said Detective Sergeant Nathan Favre.

The woman's body was discovered in an undressed state by a jogger about 8.35am in the gardens near the corner of St Kilda Road and Linlithgow Avenue, Southbank.  Some of her clothing was found nearby.

She may have been on her way to work when she was assaulted, and died at the scene, Detective Sergeant Favre said.

Police are searching for 42-year-old Scott Allen Miller, a West Australian man who has been living rough in Melbourne for at least six weeks.

Detective Sergeant Favre said Mr Miller was a suspect and appealed for him to come forward.

"Scott is a suspect in relation to the investigation and we believe he can assist us in relation to what was found at the crime scene," he said.

Police believe Mr Miller, who was known to WA Police, had been living in the Janet Lady Rotunda within the gardens. The rotunda was searched on Sunday.

WA Police are assisting with the investigation although it is believed Mr Miller may still be in the Melbourne CBD area.

Items seized from the original crime scene had led police to Mr Miller, but Detective Sergeant Favre would not say what those items were.

While police believe the woman was assaulted they are waiting on autopsy before commenting on what may have killed her, he said.

"We will await the report from the coroner as to whether these assaults have caused her death," Detective Sergeant Favre said.

"We can't rule out sexual assault as the motivation for this offence.  Certainly the manner in which the deceased was located, in a state of undress, indicates that they may have been the case."

Anyone who sees Mr Miller is urged to call triple-0 immediately and are warned not to approach him.

People with information about the death can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
