Sydney (AFP) - China has asked to operate under Australian command when it takes part in a major international military exercise led by the United States later this year, a report said Friday.

Beijing's reported decision comes as Australia leads the arduous Indian Ocean search for missing Malaysia Airlines jet MH370 which was carrying 153 Chinese when it vanished.

The Sydney Morning Herald said it understood that the request from China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) was expressed through defence channels last week, without quoting any sources.

Until recent years China rarely took part in international military exercises and the newspaper said it was the first time the PLA would operate under Western command in such a drill.

Australia's Defence Minister David Johnston would not comment on the Chinese position but has welcomed China's involvement in the Rim of the Pacific exercise which involves more than 20 nations.

"China has a central role to play in contributing to regional stability," his office said in a statement.

"We welcome the positive contributions it has made to date, and look forward to continuing to work together to enhance mutual understanding and facilitate transparency, and build trust throughout the region."

The RIMPAC exercise will be led by the US and involve more than 25,000 personnel. In the previous RIMPAC in 2012, Australia led the maritime component of the war game, coordinating some 40 ships and six submarines.

It is not known which countries besides the US will take leadership roles this year, but nations taking part include China's traditional rival Japan.

The report on China's request comes as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is preparing for his first visit to the country since becoming leader last September, a trip which also includes Japan and South Korea.

China is Australia's biggest trading partner and Abbott is pushing for the completion of a free trade deal with the Asian giant but ties have been complicated by Canberra's opposition to China's air defence zone over East China Sea islands claimed by Beijing and Tokyo.

Australia summoned China's ambassador to voice opposition to the Air Defence Identification Zone, earning a strong rebuke from Beijing.

The United States invited China to take part in RIMPAC in 2012 as it tried to reassure Beijing over its strategic "pivot" to the Pacific.

The latest round of the international maritime exercises, described by the US Navy as the world's largest, will take place in July around the Hawaiian Islands.

It is sincerely hoped that the nations of the world will, one day and before it is too late to alter their chosen course, learn that economic power is greater than military and that working cooperatively with one another so as to supply goods and services to one another is, in the long run, healthier in all aspects than "military assertiveness".

Militaries could be used to productively operate space programs and the R&D of such could provide peace time applications of the same that could greatly benefit all of the nations and peoples of the world.

New industries and services designed and engineered so as to clean up the planet and provide new energy sources that are both clean and renewable could be another helpful endeavor.

Aggression and war need not be the only solutions that national leaders turn to.

Although I don`t like bringing in China in this kind of exercises, we don`t want her to feel isolated either that will only make her behavior even worse to gain attention. I just wish that someday China will not use the strategies learn in this yearly exercises to deny access to those nations involved in asserting her island chain defenses up to Guam the US door step and beyond to implement a biggest territorial grab that China wants with her nine dash line dream since WW2. While China wants to participate, a covert electronic spying may be brewing to learn more about the allied nations capability and technology for her future technology upgrade and access denial strategies.

China is a great pretender, deceived the world that she will never use her peaceful rise to bully nations, and we believed Deng Xiaoping speech at the Special Session of the U.N. General Assembly in April, 10, 1974. Hence the US started the policy of “constructive engagement” towards China (which made them rich to modernize their armed forces to the level of the US) rests on a simple causal claim: if we treat the Chinese as an enemy we will certainly make them an enemy, but if we treat them as a friend we may make them into a friend ....and now China is using this claim to her advantage and sow fear among nations.

Fools....let's see, if I were an enemy of the West and wanted to gain access to command and control for potential future operations, why wouldn't I just invite myself to participate in drills that would allow access to communications channels and other electronic surveillance...so I can more easily detect, destroy and over-power when the need to attack comes?

Even if we refused to allow China to participate, they would undoubtely be listening in on radio and watching the games by satellite. For that reason, I don't see this as being damaging to us. Around 2 years ago, China launched a missile no less than 30 miles off the California coast from an electric diesel sub while Obama was in Asia. They wanted to see our response to a potential attack while our president was out of the country. THAT"S the kind of exercise we need to worry about, not coordinated wargames.

That is how China works, sneak in, infiltrate, learn then apply tactics learned from joint military exercises, in oppressing the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc....
As a new sea power, China lags even behind Australia let alone the US. But once they learn from the West ( as they have learned so many things from American technology ) and are strong enough, they turn around and screw the West.
And the West is too naive to even know it.
The problem with Westerners is they assume that Chinese think like them, their thought process, their goals, their way of doing thingd are totally different.
They are masters of dissimulation, they are cunning, full of ruse, wily, devious, underhanded, you can't believe a word they say.

8,000 veterans committed suicide every year or 1 per hour. These are the used tools of the special interests, eg MIC, Oil men etc. Majority suffered enormous post war stresses that they could not overcome, ended with relying on many drugs. A 43% increase suicide rate from 2009 - 2011. 2.3 million veterans are now coming back from middle east wars. Obama has started inventing new enemies in Asa Pacific, if not N Korea, it would be China or even Japan were to want to abolish of Peace Const or ask YS troops to move out of Japan soil.

How can you say "China has a central role to play in contributing to regional stability". Their behavior in South China Sea is not acceptable. To think China is a permanent member of U.N and does not respect international law. Good luck Australia, your giving China the opportunity to spy on you. International community should kick-out China and that`s a slap on their behavior. China should not be trusted to be part of international community.

That is good. A puppet vassal of the English Empire requests permission to fly under wing of English colony Australia. After all, China did entered into covert Anglo/Sino partnership between Mao and Nixon to destroy the evil Slavs.

who cares....i dont consider china a real threat, and i will not consider them a real threat untill they are capable of invading the US...and nothing they can learn from this drill is going to help them with that...the invasion force would have to be massive, to large to fly here, so they would have to come on ships and nothing in this drill is going to teach them how to deal with 11 carrier strike groups
