BAE Systems Plc (BA/) said the United Arab Emirates halted talks to buy Eurofighter Typhoon combat jets worth more than $6 billion, dealing a blow to Europe’s largest defense contractor as it seeks to add export sales.

“The U.A.E. have advised that they have elected not to proceed with these proposals at this time,” London-based BAE Systems said in a statement today after the market close. The company added that it “stands ready” to revive talks.

Negotiations are also delayed with Saudi Arabia over Typhoon aircraft, the second straight year that BAE has failed to clinch that deal. BAE said earnings this year will be clipped by 6 to 7 pence should it fail to agree on pricing.

“Good progress” has been made, and an accord in a “timely” manner would be reflected in 2013 results, it said.

Export deals are critical for Western defense companies to help offset an uncertain budget environment in the U.S. and muted spending on weapons in Europe. Saab AB (SAABB), the Swedish maker of the Gripen combat jet that competes with the Typhoon, yesterday won a competition in Brazil for 36 planes, prompting its stock to rise a record 34 percent.

Typhoon is the second European warplane to fall short in securing a deal with the United Arab Emirates for new jets. Dassault Aviation SA (AM), a previous front-runner in the competition, fell out of favor two years ago over contract talks. The U.S. has also provided information on the Boeing Co. F/A-18E/F Super Hornet to gauge interest in an export deal.
Political Backing

U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron last month visited the Dubai Air Show to lobby for the Typhoon, saying the jet “is clearly in the running here.” The U.A.E. was exploring the purchase of as many as 60 jets. BAE, along with Eurofighter partners European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co. and Finmeccanica SpA (FNC), is also pursuing exports to Bahrain and Qatar.

BAE, which began a 1 billion-pound ($1.64 billion) share buyback this year, has said full implementation of the repurchase plans was contingent on concluding the Saudi deal.

Saudi Arabia and BAE are in talks over pricing of Typhoon jets that have already been sold, even as the parties explore an additional purchase of 48 to 72 additional units of the twin-engine fighters.

“BAE Systems’ long standing relationship with its much valued customer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remains excellent,” the company said.
