OFALL the positions with which Sora Aoi has excited her Chinese fans (and therehave been many), this was among the more surprising. As anti-Japanese sentimentflared across China, the former porn star issued an online appeal, in fetchingcalligraphy, for Sino-Japanese friendship. One placard waved at anti-Japaneseprotests over the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands read simply: “the Diaoyuislands belong to China; Sora Aoi belongs to the world.”

Thisodd slogan underlines the mixed and often contradictory feelings Chinese peoplecan have about Japan. Brought up to hate it for its historic crimes, they alsoadmire it for being better at some things than China: electronic goods; socialorder; comic books—and pornographic videos. Ms Aoi, unlike her government, hasdone nothing to hurt the feelings of the Chinese people, or at least the youngmen among them. She has more than 13m followers on Sina Weibo, a Chinesemicroblog, and her public appearances have caused near-riots with a rarepro-Japanese slant.

Herswas not the only cause that hitched its wagon to the demonstrations. Some tookpart for the chance of letting off steam without feeling the sharpend of the police’s anger. Some waved portraits of Chairman Mao, whoin fact was rather insouciant about these inalienable specks of Chinesesovereignty. Most stayed away altogether. Han Han, a writer, racing driver andone of China’s most popular bloggers, called for looters and vandals to bepunished.

MsAoi’s appeal received some sympathetic comments among the 150,000 or so that itattracted. But many of her fans, like the nation as a whole, were fully behindthe protests. Some taunted her with obscene insults and threats. One comment, translated by ChinaSMACK, a website, sought to make the best of things, suggesting that, when it takes back the Diaoyu islands, China should capture MsAoi alive.

The only way Sora Aoi can somehowextinguish the Chinese patriotic "fire" is to shoot her next pornovideo in the disputed islands with a Chinese man as the actor who subjugatesher sexually. Chinese natonalism is highly emotionally charged that can only bealleviated by something equally emotionally charged. Sex and nationalism aresimilar things in terms of irration and fierceness.
(Recommend 44)

The author seemingly doesn’t understandChinese young men very well, let alone Chinese culture. The slogan "theDiaoyu islands belong to China, Sora Aoi belongs to the world.” is just the wayChinese young men express their sense of humor. They don’t really care aboutthis has-been Japanese porn star. But fortunately Sora Aoi did regainpopularity & came back to the public attention especially in China duringthe conflict between China & Japan.
(Recommend 19)

Chinese people do not wave such kind ofbanner for their admiration for some aspects of Japan. Because of theflourishing development of porn industry of Japan, how weird it is, Chinesepeople are just making fun of it. Never take it seriously, editors. You don'tknow how silly you're to write such an article. With merely superficialunderstanding of China and it's national conditions, you guys are not in theposition to issue any commentary articles on China in public.
(Recommend 19)

Claus Rasmussen Sep22nd, 23:43

it reminds me way back when, an infamous Italianporn star turned member of Italian parliament who offered to offer herself tosaddam hussein in exchange for world peace.
it may not be a proper analogy, but it doesgo to show some artists can be very entrepreneuring.
don't know about this girl aoi sora (neverhear of her, like I have never heard of a guy ai weiwei until TE made a pitchfor him), but if TE wants to name some Japanese female who really commandslarge following and good will in china, I'd nominate Ai Fukuhara, the'porcelian doll' table tennis star from japan loved and respected by so many.
(Recommend 13)

Bismarck888in replyto c3z7JhXSnc Sep 23rd, 01:51

21 楼 c3z7JhXSncin replyto Orothen Sep 23rd, 00:51
The Western press has every right to writeabout China, but what they write must be based on the truth. Seeing is sometimesnot believing. If the press cannot be objective, how can we readers beobjective? The press always serves the government it is for. Theylet we readers see what they want us to see, but not what we want to see. Andwhat I see in the Economist is nothing but criticism and slander of China, never sth about praise or admiration. Their move of trying to demonize China isirresponsible, for themselves, for China and for readers. They mislead readerson the Eastern issues. They keep claiming to take no sides on Sino-Japanissues, but what's the fact? Hypocrisy is the word springing to my mindinstantly.
(Recommend 12)

Another such incident occurred a couple ofyears ago between Canada and Greenland, again over a few mere rocks.Far more dangerous, however, was the 1969 incident between the Chinese and theRussians over a tiny island in the Ussuri River. My all-time favorite, however,is still the incident Nancy Mitford relates in "Don't Tell Alfred"-- a violent dispute between Britain and France over a nameless rock near theChannel Islands.

I am stupefied by all that crap about TheSilly Islands. The Sora Aoi angle on the story is a most welcome distraction.

it reminds me way back when, an infamous Italianporn star turned member of Italian parliament who offered to offer herself tosaddam hussein in exchange for world peace.
it may not be a proper analogy, but it doesgo to show some artists can be very entrepreneuring.
don't know about this girl aoi sora (neverhear of her, like I have never heard of a guy ai weiwei until TE made a pitchfor him), but if TE wants to name some Japanese female who really commandslarge following and good will in china, I'd nominate Ai Fukuhara, the'porcelian doll' table tennis star from japan loved and respected by so many.
