PROGRAMME
Three years after four Jianghui-I Class (Type 053H2G) frigates entered service, a modified variant Type 053H3 (Jiangwei-II) was introduced in the late 1990s. The new frigate has enhanced weapon, sensor, and C3I systems. So far at least 10 ships have been constructed in two shipyards in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Various reposts suggested that more ships could be built to replace some early variants of the Jianghu Class frigate.
DESIGN FEATURES
Jiangwei II Class appears generally similar to the original Jiangwei in size and arrangement. Improved weapon systems include using an 8-cell HQ-7 SAM to replace the original HQ-61 SAM, and replacing the original six YJ-82 SSMs with eight modified YJ-83 SSMs. In addition, the redesigned twin-100 mm main gun are installed, and two aft 37 mm AAA were moved to the top of the helicopter hanger.
Modifications on C3I and sensor systems include new fire-control Type 345 radar, which has replaced the obsolete Type 343 for the control of twin-100 mm gun and 37 mm AAAs, and datalink for over-horizon-attack on surface targets. The C3I system on Jiangwei-II is reported to be a Chinese copy of the French Thomson-CSF TAVITAC, which is installed on the latest destroyers of the PLAN.
With these improvements, Jiangwei-II are more capable than the original Jiangwei in many terms. Apparently the PLAN is generally satisfied with the performance of Jiangwei-II and is likely going to order more hulls in the near future.

PROGRAMME
Four new frigates were built in the early 1990s to join the PLAN East Sea Fleet. These ships are called by the Western analysts as Jiangwei Class, and their PLAN official designation is Type 053H2G. Building of this type stopped in the mid-1990s after the improved Jiangwei-II (Type 053H3) was introduced.
Jiangwei Class represents a shift in the Chinese naval thinking away from ships that operate close to shore and toward ocean-going warships. This frigate is generally regarded as more close to the modern standard and is larger, more capable and multirole compared to the previous Jianghu Class.
DESIGN FEATURES
Jiangwei Class has significant improvements in its air defence and anti-submarine capabilities, as well as radar, fire control, EW/ECM, and C3I systems. The most notable feature of the frigate is its 6-cell HQ-61 short-range air defence missile launcher on the front deck. The ship also carries six YJ-82 (C-802) anti-ship missiles (two triple launchers), a twin-100 mm main gun, and four twin-37 mm automatic AAA.
Jiangwei-I Class has hull-mounted sonar for antisubmarine warefare (ASW). Its ASW capability is enhanced by a Harbin Z-9C ASW/SAR helicopter, which is accommodated in the aft hanger and flight deck.
The electronic warefare and countermeasures capabilities of Jiangwei Class is comparable to the Luhu Class (Type 052) destroyer, including indigenously developed C3I and fire control systems, chaff launchers, intercept and jammer.
Despite those improvements, the Jiangwei-I Class still lacks combat capabilities of modern frigates in service with Western navy. Its air defence missile is outdated and can not intercept air strikes from different directions simultaneoously. Its sonar and helicopter is deficient to the modern submarines. Its power plant is also insufficient for long range and high speed voyage.

PROGRAMME
Almost eight years after the last Jianghu-III frigates entered service, Hudong Shipyard reopened the construction of Jianghu frigate in the mid-1990s to build an additional batch of six Jianghu frigates. Interestly, these ships kept the obsolete YJ-1 SSM as the main surface strike weapon, while other PLAN surface combatants built in the same age are all fitted with the more capable YJ-8/-82 (C-801/-802) SSM. All six ships are deployed in South Sea Fleet.
DESIGN FEATURES
Apart from its six outdated SY-1 SSMs, Jianghu-V has more capable weapon and sensor systems compared to the previous ships of same class. The four twin-37 mm manual AAA are replaced by four automatic twin-37 mm guns, giving better short-range air defence ability. The frigate probably has also been updated with improved fire-control and detection radar, EW/ECM and C2I systems.

Jianghu-III Class (Type 053HT) Missile Frigate
NAME   PLA Official Designation: Type 053HT   NATO Code-Name: Jianghu-III Class
Builders: Hudong Shipyard, 535 and 536 were built in 1984, 537 was built in the early 1990s
INVENTORY (3)
(East Sea Fleet) 535 Huangshi, 536 Wuhu, 537 Zhoushan
PROGRAMME
Jianghu-III Class (Type 053HT) is a radical upgraded variant of the Type 053H, and is regarded as the most capable variant of its class. The frigate features sealed bridge and hull design with NBC protections, twin-100 mm main guns, 8 YJ-8 (C-801) anti-ship missiles, and modern electronic warfare and C2I systems.
Despite being a fairly successful design, Jianghu-III was only built in small number, partly due to the introduction of the more advanced Jiangwei Class (Type 053H3). A total of 7 ships have been built, with four exported to the Thailand Navy (Chinese-made hull fitted with U.S. and European weapon and sensor systems). The three ships remaining in service with the PLAN are all deployed in the East Sea Fleet, serving as testbeds for new systems and designs.
DESIGN FEATURES
Compared to the original Jianghu Class, Jianghu-III shares same weapon and sensor designs as later Jiangwei Class (Type 053H2G/H3). The original single 100 mm main guns were replaced by new twin-100 mm guns; the six SY-1 SSMs were replaced by eight YJ-8 (C-801) SSMs. The third ship 537 Zhoushan is said to be fitted with the longer range YJ-82 (C-802) SSM.
More importantly, Jianghu-III is equipped with a command, control, and intelligence (C2I) system, which enables various weapons and sensors on the ship to be integrated for better combat effectiveness. Electronic warfare and countermeasures (EW/ECM) capabilities are also enhanced, indicating the future development trend of the Chinese surface combatants.
Jianghu-III is slightly larger than the previous Jinghu Class after the modifications. The frigate is capable for coastal patrol and surface strike missions, but lacks long distance self-contain ability. In addition, the frigate still suffers from extremely poor air defence and ASW capabilities as other PLAN surface combatants built before the 1990s.

PROGRAMME
Developed in the 1960s as a major surface combatant for coastal defence, the Type 053 (Jianghu Class) missile frigate is the largest surface combatant family in service with the PLA Navy, with a total of XX ships of five variants built.
The Type 053 programme began in the 1960s, when the PLAN required a new frigate equipped with air defence missiles to provide protection for small missile and artillery boats. The programme was much delayed due to the slow progress in developing China’s first short-range HQ-61 SAM and twin-100 mm main gun. Eventually the air defence missile frigate proposal was suspended and the hull design of the Type 053 was used to develop a missile frigate for surface strike purpose, which was named as Type 053H (Hai = Sea).
The first Type 053H (NATO codename: Jianghu-I Class) missile frigate 515 Xiamen built by Hudong Shipyard completed in 1975 and entered service. Later Jiangnan Shipyard was also involved in building the Type 053H missile frigates. The basic variant of the Type 053H is equipped with single-barrel 100 mm main guns and six SY-1 anti-ship missiles.
In 1978 PLAN began to improve the Type 053H, including the new 100 mm main gun, Type 343 SSM fire control radar, ‘Bean Stick’ long-range air search radar, improved sonar, new diesel engines, and water/oil replenishment equipment. This variant is called Type 053H1 (NATO codename: Jianghu-II Class)
The PLAN has also experimentally installed helicopter hanger and flight deck on one of the Type 053H frigates. The No.2 SY-1 SSM launcher, 100 mm main gun, and two twin-37 mm AAA on the aft deck were all removed to carry a Z-9 helicopter. The indigenous 100 mm main gun on the front deck was also replaced by a French-made compact 100 mm gun. The ship has a slightly larger displacement after the modifications. Only one ship 544 Siping has received such a modification, and it was designated by the PLAN as Type 053HT-H (NATO codename: Jianghu-IV Class).
DESIGN FEATURES
Jianghu-I/II Class (Type 053H/H1) frigate is generally regarded as small, obsolete, and now only valuable as coastal patrol ships. The ship has poor air defence and antisubmarine warfare capabilities, and its command and control (C2) system is very primitive. In addition, the frigate has poor self sustaining ability and can’t combat in regions far from its base.
The primary surface weapon is the six SY-1 anti-ship missiles, with a maximum range of 30 km and a warhead of 500 kg. If hitting the target, the missile’s powerful warhead can sink a small-to-medium-size ship, but it is not very effective in an intensive ECM/EW environment. The secondary surface/land strike weapon is the two single-barrel 100 mm main guns, which are operated merely using optical sight with no radar indication.
The air defence mainly relies on the four manually operated twin-37 mm anti-aircraft artillery, though some ships are fitted with PL-8 or PL-9 short-range SAMs and HN-5 shoulder launch SAMs to increase the air defence capability. The ASW capability is almost none, but its SAW multiple rocket launchers are effective weapons for fire support to land.
