m bureau of The Associated Press that reported Israel to have returned controv
ersial drone aircraft to China due to US pressure.
"There has been no change in the status of the parts and the matter is still b
eing discussed," said Defense Ministry spokeswoman Rachel Niedak-Ashkenazi.
The AP quoted Israeli defense sources Tuesday as saying Israel had suspended a
n upgrade for the Harpy killer unmanned aerial vehicle sold to China in the 19
90s. It said Israel had already returned the received parts without being upgr
aded with sophisticated equipment that would have enhanced their performance.
The entire episode has put Israel under enormous pressure from Washington, whi
ch sees China as a potential rival and does not want to see it armed with soph
isticated weapons.
Ministry officials in the defense establishment told The Jerusalem Post that t
he matter of the Harpy is still very sensitive. While refusing to reveal detai
